I have been given a gold and silver cache buried in a plot of about 400 sq ft. (exact location no longer remembered). it is located in a box of aprox 8" square and buried aprox 18 to 24 inches below surface. It consists of silver ingots and various gold and silver coin. My question is: What kind of metal detector do I need to locate this type of treasure.

1st - I noticed this was your very first post - so, Welcome Aboard! You didn't list your state (or country) in your profile. So, you might take a look at Sub-Forums: Missouri and Sub-Forums: Texas for information (i.e., clubs, etc.) directly related to your states.

2nd - This is what I would use (are you serious or playing with us?).

400 sq. ft. so 20 x 20, I would take machinery out and start blading it off carefully, inch by inch, and be done with it pretty quick. Any brand detector will do the job though if you want to go that route.

yeah you can rent a bobcat for 250 for the weekend

Welcome from Northern Virginia

You did not mention what kind of box (Metal box wood box) what type of a box would let us make a better idea as what to use. I would use any fairly new detector and run NO discrimination. You would look and pinpoint LARGE targets. If pinpointing a target lest say of 5 or 6 inches forget it. Do the large pinpoint targets first !!

Welcome from Middle, TN... Use a piece of heavy equipment

Probe and shovel.

The late, great "Karl von Mueller" started his very successful treasure finding career with a probe.

Lay out a grid with wood stakes and contractors twine and have at it!

Good luck to all,

The Old Bookaroo
