I was on my way to a local grade school that recently closed. On the way I passed this house, which I go past very often.

I've never got up the nerve to stop and ask if I could MD but this time I thought I'd give it a try. The people who lived here were friendly and said I could hunt all I wanted to.

Best of the finds

I'm a little disappointed that I didn't find anything older. The two Indian Heads were found early the first day so I was pretty excited.

I am going to make one or two more trips and try some other coils.

:)

I've been nursing a pulled muscle on my right side so I haven't been able to get back to this place until yesterday.

Used the Super 12 this time. It was a little difficult since there was so much trash in the ground and the Super 12 was really to large to use here. Was able to dig an interesting buckle.

Lately on this forum and others there have been some comments about the DFX not being able to pick up targets that are close to iron. That has not been my experience and yesterday I had another good example.

These four items came out of the same hole. The small nail was on top at about 4 inches, then the nickel, then the quarter round 5 inches and then the large square nail at around 6 inches. The tip of the large nail was pointing up and the nail angled off in a downward direction. I've had many experiences with good targets next to iron and they always make me smile :)

No "D" on the back, can only dream about it ???

Nate, Yea I'll be at the DFX hunt in Michigan in April :D

Updating post.

I own a DFX myself - had it for about five or six years now. I've hunted numerous old properties and found some good stuff occasionally, but I've always had the nagging feeling that another machine would have found more targets that the DFX, with its stock coil, simply couldn't find. This is especially true of targets dropped in soft ground that may have, over many years, been repeatedly trodden upon, pushing coins or rings deeper and deeper, beyond the reach of the DFX's detecting ability. I did buy another coil, the Jimmy Sierra HotShot, but it proved unsatisfactory, and I will not sink (pun intended) any more money into new coils for this machine; I just don't feel it's cost-effective. My advice to all prospective buyers of new machines is to try out a Minelab Explorer or perhaps the new E-track. While I do not own one and have not used one of these myself, I have met a growing number of detectorists who have found excellent targets at amazing depth with the Minelab's stock coil. I regret not buying a Minelab, but I was new to this hobby and was unfamiliar with all the choices available.
My point in writing this is to say that I empathize with your relative disappointment in not finding older coins at this very old property, and I suspect (as you seem to) that other targets are present that your machine has not -cannot - find, at least with the coil you are presently using. Good luck.

Whoops - didn't see that you have a Minelab Excalibur in addition to the DFX. Sorry! But I stand by what I said about the DFX.

Nice finds. Sure would be cool if that 16 had a D onit! :)

Looks like you're feeling better, Schrecky. Any luck on that addition? Have they adopted you yet? :tard:

Is the buckle silver, because it sure looks like silver. :icon_scratch:

I do have an Excal, not to thrilled about it. It does however make a good "in the water" detector. At inland locations the DFX is much more my choice of tool.
