Oh yes, and in case you were wondering, the PIG was a yard sale find from yesterday as well. He is a bank and I paid $1 for him. How cute?! He has a repaired ear, but I just couldn't resist him for that price ;)

The books I bought today totaled $10 for the lot. Let's hope that at least one of them can be sold for a profit.

METRO RETRO...AAHHH what can I say? I did not know about the bookfinder.com website. You have just made my year!

MJM579...So I checked on the 3 books mentioned here and I think I found the editions; (this is what I could do not having the books in hand):
Daughters Of the Revolution and Their Times, 1769-1776 $10.00
Daughters Of the Revolution and Their Times, 1769-1776 by Charles Carleton Coffin - and other uncommonly good books found at Biblio.com
The Compleat Angler $23.05
The Compleat Angler By Izaak Walton - Used Books - Hardcover - Third Edition - 1905 - from Recycling Books and Biblio.com
Uncle Tom's Cabin $75.00 This is the only one that I found for 1852 and Hobart and Robbins, it is Volume 2:
Uncle Tom's Cabin or, Life Among The Lowly, Vol. 2 by Harriet Beecher Stowe: John P. Jewett and Company, Cleveland, OH. Hardcover - jeffersonstbooks

My experience with Rare book dealers is to call first and see if they are accepting books, nothing like lugging a box of books in and being told they are not buying or don't have time to look. Do it in small batches if you can. And if there are more than one where you live get a second opinion to prevent lowball pricing. They will offer you about 1/3 the price that they will try and sell them for.

You should be able to make more than the 50 cents you paid.
And if you have a Half-price Books near you please don't take them there, they will tell you they are worthless and keep them, (my experience).

HH
Don't Blink

Thanks again everyone. I REALLY appreciate all of the effort.

Wow, look at all of that art! MJM579, do you only flip to other dealers face to face only? Or do you sell online?

I see some titles that I am interested in, if you're selling. Please give me a heads up if/when you plan to list these, of if you're selling directly. Thanks :)

I sell on eBay under mm579. I just hate that site bc the fees will kill ya! If I sell outside of eBay I usually invoice through PayPal that way we both are protected. I still get a hit with a fee, but a much smaller fee. IM me with the titles you are interested in. I can email you better pictures of each title so you can make an educated decision. I don't want to mislead anyone, and ultimately I want these books to make it into the hands of someone who will love them as much as the previous owner. I don't know for sure, but she MUST have been a collector or sorts. The guy told me that someone else went in before he got there and took out quite a few old books. If this was the "leftovers", I can only imagine what was in her house to start off.

Wow..what a nice collection. You are going to read them all before you sell them right? I would want to. . Some gorgeous art and bindings and things. If you have an Ugly Duckling book..some are very valuable so I saw on TV.

Mjm, I was wondering what the booklet "Swing out in Anklets" was. And a few others, but will wait to hear back about that one. :)

The Swing out in Anklets item appears to be an empty package for hosiery or socks of some sort. It was inserted in the Air Travel pamplet. Perhaps the owner went on a cruise with them and put this inside as a momento. Not sure about that one though :)

Thanks for checking Mjm. I'll send you a U2U now.

That possible antebellum leather book cover..do you think it was carved or formed? Is it leather? That is so very cool. I don't need it (I keep telling myself) ..but it surely will appeal to many what with the figure in period costume on the front. It reminds me of Scarlett and Atlanta! How do you think it was made? Formed or carved?

Cant check IM from my nook. Ill read your message tomorrow. Getting ready for a business trip to Detroit. Yea me!

DESERT - it appears to be formed. The front and reverse of the cover are in good shape, but the binding portion is missing. Thx for your interest.

Honestly if there was a low print rate it's for a reason and that usually is lack of over counter sales . Now if the book was written by a famous author it might have some value to those who have a collection of the authors works and it's a missing piece to their collection . Of coarse jackets , book condition inside and out and signed books hit the roof if the signature is authenticated . And just to clear up something that was said about first editions . When a book is copyrighted and the printing of the first edition begins it can have more than one printing company and it's still a first edition . The reason is because some company like Waldon Books get the contract in NY they can legally sub-contract other company's across the country to also print the book as well . And all those books are still first editions ... and a printed picture of a lithograph even if it's by a famous artist ... is still a print and doesn't hold a ton of value either.
But old books are cool and the pictures are interesting as well . But today finding any book of tremendous value is harder than it seems . IMHO , Woodstock
woodstock (or anyone else)- It seems you may know a little more than a lot of us on here when it comes to old books (more than me anyway).
Question-The book I mentioned earlier, "Daughters of the American Revolution 1769-1776". I cannot find that book for sale anywhere, other than facsimile copies, or free ebooks. 1- If this book had a low number of copies printed originally making it by definition a "rare" book, will that help to increase the value? and 2- Being that it is available to read for free via the internet, does that devalue that same book at all? Thoughts?
