i purchased an antique gunmetal cigarette case today. the front is set with small diamonds. they are quite grimy and i would like to restore them to their full luster. however i have not owned any gunmetal pieces before and am not sure about cleaning it--the materials i usually use on precious metal jewelry (soap, ammonia, water) may be harmful to gunmetal.
there is also some very, very minor surface rust in various locations on the case, such as in the diamond settings (they are set directly into the gunmetal) and near the clasp mechanism. i would also like to ask about removing this or doing something to prevent it from worsening.
does anybody have experience in cleaning antique gunmetal pieces or suggestions about how to properly clean and preserve this item?
