How old is This broken crockery I dug in a bottle dump area next to a civil War era house a confederate soldier lived in. How old could it possibly be? Any ways or ideas I CAN clean it correctly without ruining it? Or leave it like that?
That's hand thrown salt glaze stoneware. In the US, most of it dates in the 1800's. Its hard to tell without more of it. Soap and water is all you need to wash it up.
Looks like an Albany slip interior, as Smokey said it is most likely 1800s but hard to say how old. Probably from a bee hive style jug from 1880 period give or take. You can't hurt it anymore than it has already been.
