How old is this button?

I found this button at a early 1800’s-1920’s homestead. Civil war troops camped there, the Mormon battalion camped there, and so did Mexican American troops. It looks to have a star design or a gear like design, could someone tell me the date range on this button, it is made of iron.

Sorry to have to tell you... lacking any maker's mark or other markings which can be time-dated, your iron "pressed-birdcage shank" button is impossible to time-date, other than saying it could be as old as the mid-1800s and as new as this year. Taking into consideration the history of the place you dug it, we can still only say mid-1800s to early-1900s... and most likely, late-1800s/early-1900s, because the specific version of button you found does not seem to get found at civil war sites nor Indian-Wars era sites.
