**How Dumb are you ?**

Hi all,

A dumb story. I have not found any silver with my metal detector. So I did a test and put a silver dime in-front of it. The coin had to be 4 inches away for the detector to pick it up. So with grass and dirt on top, plus swing space. That gives me about 1-2 inches of search depth for silver. When most coins are at 3-4" so I am thinking. I need to get a new detector and pay 800 + dollars that I had at one point but don't any more. So I am thinking crap I will never find silver cause when I am I ever going to have 800 bucks again. Then it dawned on me the other day I just need a bigger search coil for $50.00 not a whole new detector! That I can do/try first!! DUHHH!!!

I gave you mine, so whats your dumb metal detecting story, how dumb are you?

OK.... I'll tell one.....

I hate to read instruction manuals...just like the best of youz....

You know how when you turn on your detector...it has a screen that flashes up and tells you how much battery life you have left.... Well I was under the impression that if it didn't say '12' then your batteries were no good.... You have no idea how many sets of batteries I put into that thing for the first three months! Glad I finally read just a wee bit of the instructions...that was getting very expensive! :P

That's a funny one Nana. Beep, you didn't say if the tree that got hit was the one where your detector was. And as for your question it was only about a two mile hike to the main dirt road. Waited for a couple of hours and flagged down the first vehicle that came by. I was lucky enough that it was a four wheel drive truck and could get to my truck. I had jumper cables to get my truck started. That was in 1989 and I have not left my lights on since.

Slow -> No, I was lucky...it didn't hit the tree where I stashed the detector. I was just North of the ridge...the lightning probably hit the ridge right above me. Glad you made it out ok.
