Just reading a related post (http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,137976.0.html)
I'm wondering how you go about finding the property owner.

I KNOW you have to go to the county clerk or tax assessor, but what then?
Do they have maps of the county showing parcel numbers?

I have the intersection of two streets, but there are no structures on the property.
It is fenced off.

Once I get to the county offices, what do I do? What do I look for, ask for?

UncleVinny, oh... you mean THAT intersection? Tsk Tsk. Well why didn't you say so! I own that lot, and grant you permission to detect there. Have fun! ;D

What I do is go to the clerks office of the township you are interested in. Tell them you are trying to find the owner of the parcel of land and they will guide you to the tax maps of the town. They will show you how to read the numbers on the map and it will tell you the name and address of the person that is paying the taxes (owns) the property and land. Easy, just a little bit bothersome having to keep going back. Thats why I find a few areas first before I go.
Hope that helps, good luck hunting :)

I'm pretty lucky, my county, PASCO, has a pretty cool tax appraiser websitehttp://www.appraiser.pascogov.com/. It uses interactive satellite maps with zoom capabilities. Unfortunately, that is where my luck ends as I normally get turned down or ignored 9 out of 10 times ::)

More and more areas are putting that info on line.

Allegheny County and it's neighbor, Beaver County have web sites with all the properties listed and different ways to search them. I don't know how many other counties in Pennsylvania have them...but it sure beats the heck out of going to the clerks office and looking at Plat maps. Your county seat, the court house should house all the records and they are open to the public to search.

The post you referenced, mine, I was able to do a street search on line to obtain every house on the street, the owner, pictures of the property, value, previous owner..etc. and whether the property was vacant or not...which is extremely convenient to MD'ers to see a list with a column for vacant...just like X marks the spot to me. The link to Allegheny County's is: http://www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/search.asp
Just to give you an idea how easy it is for some of us.

I was really shocked to find out that our property boundaries/records are mapped online through google earth. There was a link on our counties website. Once its downloaded its overlayed onto Google Earth. You can zoom into the specific piece of land and it shows a number. This number is referenced back at the courthouse and all info is available.

Hope this info helps. I know its helped me out tremendously.

If you go to the County Recorders office you'll find plat maps that you use to find that information on.

If not online, go to county tax assessors office.
Sometimes, with a good presentation of yourself, you can find girls in the office that are very helpful.

Don't bother to go in 1st thing Monday morning, last thing Friday, or right before lunch or closing time!

In California we go to the County Recorder’s/Clerk’s Office for those records. You can find how to get that information at this site: http://www.ccr.saccounty.net/
