How do you dump coins on an out of state road trip?

I would start a member ship with a bigger bank.
Just do some research and find a bank that is near your home, and also has branches in some of the towns you plan to stop in.
That's what I did.
Also...If you're in a hard spot..
Try grocery stores...large ones such as food lion, or foodlands...
They will always cash in atleast $100 worth for me.

I'm with 7 different institutions, including Wells Fargo. The problem with Wells Fargo(at least here in Utah) is they don't have coin counters.

Ohhh, yeah I never hope to have a coin counter when i go on trips.
I just pack a lot of roll.. lol
I have a compartment in my car, full of half rolls... lol.

When I went on vacation last year I would just spent my halfs on the items that I bought gas and food. They could not refuse them. I also kept rolls and rolled them back up and sold if I spent $31 in gas I would give them $40 in halfs. I also belong to 4 different banks and I would find one and cash my coins in if needed.....Matt

Most banks have affiliates. Find out who they are & just roll up the halves. I dumped $1000+ in halves last time I was in Idaho to free up some dough. Did pretty well on that drive finding over 30 silvers.

Good luck... Hope yer not coming to Vegas... Stay away from my silver! J/K!

It is pretty simple my friend. You are going to re-roll them instead of throwing them into a box or bag loose. I started doing that on alot of my halves because of what a pain in the azzzz BUTT it was to use the coin machines. Now, I would say I re-roll 90% plus of the halves I do. I honestly think it is faster than dealing with coin counting machines, but even if it wasnt, on a road trip, you better just plan on it. PM if you want a box of (1000) half dollar rolls. I could probably sell you one of the several I have, I believe I paid about 6 bucks for each box.

Good luck.

Great advice so far.

How much are you talking about dumping? Small amounts, or over $1,000?

I would most likely be aiming to swing at least 1k every time. However since I have no idea how many banks I would be hitting, I'm not quite sure.

On the very few RT's I've taken, dumping is the problem.

I've found that "dump all you can, when you can" is the only solution to the problem.

Grocery stores, banks where you don't have an account, spend at retail, etc., seem to be the key.

On my last RT, I dumped $200 at a bank, then $550 at another, and $500 at another. I had accounts at 2 of the 3 banks. I also spent over $100 in gas, food, etc.

Wish I had a better answer for you.

Get a big branch account and dump with bags. Bags are the answer to your problem.

Some banks (like mine) only will take bagged coin if you have a business account. And you need a tax ID to prove that you own a business to open one (which I don't have). So the coin machine is my friend. And I don't have 10k in funds to leave in there because there is a minimum deposit you have to have in the account to prevent all the fees. Its all in the fine print :evil5:

Dude, you need to shop around for different banks.

Also, you do not need a tax ID. You can DBA yourself (your name) and use your SSN. I own two businesses and do not need to maintain a minimum balance as long as I use the debit card once/month. Even if they charge $15/month for the account, its well worth it for the time saved by dumping bags. YMMV.

I'm planning a road trip for around the end of April and I'm wondering how I'm going to dump the coins I'll invariably acquire along the way once I'm out of Utah and there's no Mountain America Credit Unions.

I can relate to this. My area, and beyond, is almost entirely made up of smaller local/regional type banks. Even though I have accounts at several different banks, if I venture more than 50-60 miles away from home there usually are no branches of any of my banks anywhere around. I solved the problem by just carrying more money with me and lugging all the coins home to dump. Besides, I'm there to buy, not sell. That one bank at which you choose to dump very well might have been that once-in-a-lifetime score.

If you must dump on the road and can't find a bank at which you have an account, you'll either have to find a bank that will service a non-member (many will, but very well may charge a fee) or open an account on the road. As others have stated, use dumps in lieu of your "buying cash" while on the road.

Best of luck on your trip! :icon_thumleft:

Check out the website of the big banks for locations in towns that you will be travelling. Chase, Bank of America, Well Fargo etc. Then you need to call the branches and find out it what form will they accecpt coins from a customer and do they have a coin counter.

In my area some bank of americas accept rolled coins most only accept coins in a bag that they count and credit your account in a few days. It depends on how deep your pockets are and can you wait 3-4 days for the money or do you need it to buy more coins with.

the best way is more cash the better, then u can make it to a bank you have an account at, the top 3 banks are just about every where. and in many out of the way places will not have coin counter machines so u need rolls and like others said a little research will go along way

Go to http://coincounterdatabase.wikispaces.com/ and look up bank locations with coin counters in the states in which you're going to travel. It isn't an exhaustive list...but if everyone on this site added (or at least confirmed) banks with coin counters in them then we'd have a complete list very quickly.

Lol i give out halves sometimes but its gets annoying trying to teach [______] that halves are real money. As for my eisenhowers i found a dealer willing to pay $1.05 ea.

bring coin lok bags and alot of cash so you can spread your dumps at the major banks you have accounts with using the bags.
