Metal Detecting
My son and I were detecting along a local creek in an area where a flood in the 70's leveled a lot of houses. I got a faint but solid repeatable signal and started digging, way way down. I look in the hole and see someone looking back at me and pulled out an old japanese 5 yen, ok it wasn't that deep but joking aside i was surprised to find this coin and it was around 10" down. I found a 10 yen in my parents yard last february, it just goes to show it is very interesting what is in the ground, good luck all...and have a great weekend!

Possibly you stumbled upon someones scattered coin collection. Coin could have been brought back by a WW2 soldier and put in a dresser drawer for many years. Flood comes along and spreads household goods down stream.

I considered that, also starting in around 1890 there was a gold rush here, there where a lot of chinese miners here, dad claims there were many japanese as well, either way it was a cool find. I thought it was a washer at first :o)

10" down, could be from 200 years back. I think you got it right about Chinese miners.
I found an Iraqi quarter on the beach at Ocean City, MD. I found a 1 euro & 2 euro coins on the beach in Lewis DE. You never know what you might find. Frank...

That's what keeps my interest in this hobby. You never know what's going to show up when you retrieve the target. Often it turns out to be something you'd never guess.

To answer your first question, it depends on what I'm finding. If I'm getting old/valuable coins or relics, I'll dig down a couple of feet. If I'm finding memorials at 10", I'll find another site.
