How can this happen?

I found this bullet at the battle of williamsport site.
It looks like it's been imprinted.
Can a bullet be fired, hit a hard object and become imprinted?
This is the same weight as a 58.

They can hit something so hard that it leaves an imprint. But it could have been "shaped" by a soldier too. If it is a minie, I have seen MANY things carved from minies that will blow your mind. That is very odd looking though I have to admit.....Never seen one that looked like this.

I have a book that shows all kinds of carvings, but this looks way to perfect. Maybe the leached patina is covering the carved marks. I don't know.

Ty,
If you look carefully, it looks like the imprint of the exact spacing a hogs teeth. ;D
O.K., I made that up.
Congrats,

That's just weird. Maybe somebody was trying to make something with a bullet. Indented surface seems too flat to have been caused by anything other than a tool. Just the way it looks to me. Could it be shaped by hitting something? Sure. But I have no idea what it might have been. Matter of fact, I can't even imagine how it could be shaped that way.

Good find and conversation piece.

Bet you can't replicate it. ;D

The way bullets flew around during a battle it very well could have hit a seam in a wagon wheel or something and changed shapes to that extent

Just in case it is an impression, I took my compass and came up with this.

You guys that know your stuff might know of something this size.

Very interesting indeed.

It could be a "piece" of a lead sabot used on the bottom of projectiles.
