So you recorded the finds and they stopped you from detecting :-\ I find that amazing, and down right frustrating. was the field that produced these finds ploughed land :dontknow: if it was there is no reason to stop detecting it, the finds are already out of context by ways of the farming activities. This one of the reasons I tell Archy's nothing and will keep on working that way ::)
Sorry you lost a good spot Paul :'(

not a lot of people know this, but if the land owner does not want you to declare the find site , you don't have to. Gold silver or other wise, this is hidden in the small print of the law.
Robert.

But you still have to declare the find?
but not the site

Oh...bummer :laughing9:

Unfortunately it was my friends site and i was allowed to detect there with him,
he declared all his long brooch parts to the F.L.O. and they scheduled that part of the field
and declared it a possible saxon burial site (seems very possible thats what it is).
We still have access to all the rest of the field and surrounding area and they will notify him if and when they intend to dig the site "quote" When time and money allows"
They have promised to notify him beforehand....so we will have to wait and see....PaulB.

I have a question i know iam way off base on this but i need to know a month ago when i was hunting that very old field here in town where i found that buckle that now is my avatar i also found a lot of items i put in my scrap box if it looked interesting to me ,after seeing dragonbreath,s find on this post it reminded me of one of my finds that week i seriously don't think its the same but hey i thought i would give it a show ,in that field it wouldn't surprise me .It came up on my DFX as a large copper On the top right i see 2 snakes facing each other swallowing a third snake ? or my old eyes are playing tricks on me .Dd60

Almost certainly just your eyes. If you look at any rusty item long enough you can start to find images.

I used to do the same thing to make sure nothing got by me. Because when I didn't.... things were getting by!

Hi Dragonsbreath,

What makes you think that the brooch is Saxon? Was Ouroboros a common motif with Saxons as it was with Romans? What are the dimensions? Can it be a Roman terret?

No :P that picture you posted is a Celtic Terret ring, you can see were the fixing bar has broken of the top :read2:, but that said it is possible that the Brooch Dragonsbreath posted could be Roman.

I believe I posted a find from British Detectorist database of a Roman terret. Tomoz I'll find this reference. Can anyone give me an example of Ouroboros in Saxon artifacts.

I beleive the one you posted is indeed Celtic 1st c, which is in the Roman period and therefore get confused with being of roman origin, I actually have one the same complete. :icon_thumleft:

Ouroboros symbles have been used since 1600bc, there are a lot of cultures that have used it, but this link shows the correct Brooch that Dragonsbreath posted, and indeed it is Pagon Saxon :icon_thumleft:

Ouroboros symbol was used by ancient Egyptian, Greek and Roman cultures. The brooch in your link does not have zoomorphic terminals. Usually pen-annular brooches have ones as opposed to annular (?) thing found.
But anyway brooch or terret it's in such poor corroded condition that is difficult to say for sure.

Like I said earlier a celtic Terret Ring, your own link confirms it, late Iron Age(Celtic) Early Roman.... this is the one I have :)
