I got out for a little bit after work yesterday afternoon. Due to the late hour, I hit a spot right near my home. The site was an old homestead that is now Green Acres. It dates back to at least the mid 18th Century, but may go back as far as the 17th. I finally stumbled accross an old foundation that was rumored to exist on the land. It was so iron infested that nearly every inch surrounding the cellar hole was screaming in all metal mode. I was not really equipped properly for a trashy site and it was a bit too much for the 9.5" coil. I plan on returning soon with my 4x6 DD coil.
I did manage to pluck out a few keepers from on top of the iron, including the two buckles on the left. I found the one on the right a few miles from the site lat weekend, and it appears to be a newer, manufactured one. The two found at the site seem to be hand forged. Can anyone tell me how long these types of saddle buckles have been used? My best guess would be Civil War and later, but IDK.
I also found the House of Westmore Compact. Westmore was the pioneer of Hollywood makeup. Prior to his appearing on the Hollywood scene (around 1920), actors applied their own makeup. At first I thought I had found a large cent when this small compact showed up in the dirt pile. Hopefully next time I wont be disappointed.
All in all, it was not a very good day, but the place looks like it has potential. Any advice on detecting iron infested areas is appreciated!
