Mercury1: i don't know if you've tried but go to youtube and search the Garrett AT Pro. Some very nice videos of the Pro in action. If i would have started out with a 250 i might would still have be using it. It's pretty descent as an entry level machine. Here's my deal...always wanted a detector...a few years back i got a Bounty Hunter for Christmas...in 3 days i realized i was gonna love the hobby...i gave the Bounty Hunter to my mom cause she's always wanted to try metal detecting...i go and research research research and decided on the AT Pro. Me and mom go hit an old plantation home built in 1742 here in my county. I'm pulling flat button after flat button and a few pieces of clad and some 1940 costume jewelry. Mama has foil and cans. I wanted to see exactly how far she was able to get into the ground with the BH...i hear a nice clean mid tone and call her over. I've dug so many buttons i figured that this was another. My AT Pro is telling me 6 inches...she swings the BH and not even a hint of a blip...blurp...or chirp. I dig...flat button at 5 or 6 inches with the shank attached...she finished out the winter season with a few pieces of clad...now she's upgraded to the Pro and is keeping up with me on the good finds. I did a test and planted some clad anywhere from 2 to 8 inches to see what the BH was getting depth wise. I got a quarter at 6 inches and that was it. Dimes at 6 no way...dimes and pennies at 4. Just saying...if you're not happy with what you have after a while move on up. I seriously doubt I'll ever get tired of this hobby...I love going places i think no one has thought about looking or places that others have been denied access to. I love using my gift of gab to get permission from old ornery farmers or landowners. I've even had some business cards made up to look a little more professional when I'm working on a tough landowner. I always tell my landowners they can see what ever it is I dig up...and that they can keep as little or all of what i find. I like the fact the history is out of the ground for us to see. It's doing them or me any good by waisting away in the dirt...9 times out of 10 it's worked for me.

Hey MD, appreciate hearing your story and your tips. When I got the 250, I got a bunch of freebies(crappy junk) with it. Went out today and snapped my "Polymer Digger". I already knew it was crap and tried to order Leshe digger but Bart was out. Guess ill be hunting the yard with garden shovel till I get something else. Seriously thinking about ordering AT pro tomorrow. Found my first square nails today before digger broke. HH

Mercury1...no problem at all! I messed up my ankle yesterday in my pool. I'm 12 trapped in a 30 year olds body so I didn't get a chance to go today lol! I suggest looking at New England detectors page. I don't know if you have a pinpointer but I bought the Garrett propointer from them and got a lesche for free. The propointer and lesche package was 127. The propointer alone is like 120 and the lesche is around 40 I think so not a bad deal. The propointer is definitely worth it. I don't know how I lived without that thing the first year I detected. I'll be honest the lesche is nice in hard ground and rocks but the best digger I've found is a blue handled trowel from Lowes. The handle is rubbery and big so it doesn't kill your hands digging. Nice sharp point on it and kinda scoop shaped to really move some dirt. They make a big one and a small one and I've found the bigger one is the best. I'm outside now...gonna snap a photo of it and post it. If you get the AT Pro go to YouTube and search it. Garrett has put out about 7 or 8 videos that are really instructional. If you watch the videos over and over enough you'll hear the sounds and almost know what to look and listen for once you start. I highly suggest start in pro mode and learn it. Don't be afraid. Dig everything at first while you listen and pay attention to the numbers. Associate the numbers with what u dig. It amazes people when I can call the target before I ever dig it. Let me know what happens! Good luck!

MD, is that lowes trowel strong? My wife had a cheapo trowel in the shed and I was digging up a stump today and tried to use it to expose some roots so I could chop them. It was about as strong as a noodle. Lol. Yes I got the pro pointer when I got the 250 and I love it. Ya I've checked out some you tube vids and ill watch them all. Ill let you know what I end up doing. HH

Merc...strong as an ox brother. I wrench on it and pry on roots and it has never bent and the rubber is still in one piece with no cracks or tears. It is stainless steel. I've had it for 2 years and you can see...it's still going strong. Look for that one at Lowes. I think around 10 bucks should get it.

Thanks MD. Ill be stopping at lowes tomorrow.

No problem. I'll be here all day tomorrow if you need me. Got the app on my phone so new posts alert me immediately. Don't forget...the bigger one is the better of the two with the blue handle.

Ive broke two of those Lowes digging tools you pictured in about a month. 1st one broke where the handle is welded to the spade, the other broke off half way down the handle. I found another tool there that has been doing great. Found a pic of it online..i think I paid under $7

Guitarguy...sorry to hear you've had trouble with yours. Like I said I've had mine going on 2 years now with no problems. I saw the one you've got pictured at Lowes. It just looked to me like it wouldn't move enough dirt for me.

MD, I got that digger at lowes and so far so good. It just needs to last till I can get the Leshe. Holding off on upgrading detector.

Merc...that's the one. As long as you don't try to pry up concrete or something crazy you shouldn't have any problems. I've got a bass tournament tomorrow in Raleigh but I'm headed back out to the silver garden on Thursday. I'm hoping I have can find some more of that old silver...shooting for the 1800's this time lol!

Well good luck to you MD. I got no silver CRH today. I'll try tomorrow with the detector. I'm going to library to research local park history and see if I can find an area that used to get use, but is now forest.

Just curious Merc. I was gonna say if you were close to Carolina we should get up and hunt together sometime.
