Hottest Hunting Sites & Coin Relic Secrets

There are lots of potentially good hunting sites but most of them are off-limits to the majority of THers.

In your opinion, what is the hottest type of THing site readily available to the majority?

Just imagine a good friend is getting started into detecting and you really want him (her) to succeed. Where would you tell him to hunt?

:)I would tell them to hunt at the beach in the early eve at about six or so. Most people start to leave about that time and if you hunt around the blanket and towel marks you find a lot of stuff. It seems that the more trash that they leave the more good stuff they lose. The digging is easy and they can get to know there machine better. That is what i would till my friends to do.

All great suggestions and I'm sure we're all overlooking many great hunting sites right in our own areas.

Just this evening someone from this area was telling me about a large hotel that burned down in the 1960's. I was an old place dating way back. I had never heard of it before.

It pays to chat with the oldtimers in your community.

Re: Hottest Hunting Sites

Real good question!
Activity and age are key factors. The more activity and the older the better. I think a place where tent camping has taken place over a period of time say 50 to 100 years and has not been used for 40 years would be idea. Tent campers loose a lot and 50 to 100 years would be a good time period , with no activity you the trash should be low. Tents campers could be anyone, Scouts, Soldiers, travelers etc.

Second would be an active beach where people would make daily deposits to your sand bank. The best rated beach is in Orange County, south of LA. Why? The best concentration of rich people.

Re: Hottest Hunting Sites

For me, the best places to detect have changed over the years. The stuff I look for is not replenished. Coins and jewelry can still be found at beaches, school yards, and in the water, and these can be good spots, but I prefer to find old coins. (There aren't any beaches where I live anyway).
Old rural churches and courthouse lawns used to produce my best finds, but they have been hit hard over the years. Although an experienced detectorist with a good detector can still make some very nice finds at these places.
Now, I try to concentrate my efforts on places that were previously inaccessible, such as street and sidewalk tearouts in the older sections of town. I have also done fairly well researching where old picnic grounds used to be. It can be a lot of work, but the rewards are usually worth the effort.
Another favorite are plowed fields where old school houses, farm houses, churches, and townsites used to exist, but you need to do research to find these places.

Re: Hottest Hunting Sites

I always hunted the beach, but since it's 1.5 hours away, I decided to hit local sites and see what happened. I found that sports fields give up the most gold....depending on the time of year, it can be even better than the beach.

All are great locations here if you have one near you, and here's one for the away from the crowd type MD'er. Hunting or fishing camp sites during the off season. Many have been used since the way back when and you'll find alot of interesting stuff. Bullets, shell casing, old fishing gear and coins and rings too.

Welcome silverswede and you are exactly correct!

In fact, these are top on my list for this coming spring here in Michigan.

Re: Hottest Hunting Sites

I don't mean to double up on posts here but I just got this great idea from posting on another thread.

I'm generally not for night hunting due to the danger. However, here is one angle that could work for some people.

Top hunting spots are private yards. We all know that, right?

Here's an idea to get onto those yards to do coin shooting.

Some smaller towns have a town-wide nightcrawler hunting event. Starting at about 10:00 or so, almost every yard will be filled with little flashlight beams from nightcrawler hunters seeking free fish bate.

The people in those towns expect this to happen everytime it rains. After a nice warm rain, that night the crawlers come out.

In our town people look outside and say "It's just the bate hunters again."

Young and vigour THers may be able to travel with the bate hunter groups. You'd have to hunt faster than normal and use a coin popper or screw driver, but at least you'd be able to hunt lots of spots you could never get at during the daytime.

And too, I know most land owners wouldn't care as long as there was no damage. The reason being at these times people in these towns are in a trespasser mood.

This may be way out there but it just might work. You would want to make sure you stayed with a group of bate hunters only.
