March 1990 was a fine spring day. Plenty of sunshine and fun as I started walking in one of my favorite fields. I had been walking for only ten to fifteen minutes when I started hearing a sound that made me wonder what it was.

The first time I heard it I was at the top of a rise and really did not pay that much attention to it. The next time it caught my attention, and I thought briefly to myself that I must be close to a hornet's nest. I looked around in the air in front of me to see if I could see any of the flying insects silhouetted against the blue sky. While I did not see any that did not mean it were not hornets. They may have been out of my field of vision just then. So, I looked around to see if I could see a small hole in the ground. Nope, no hole easily spotted either. So, I continued to walk and look for relics.

I walked to the end of my area and turned around. Just about in the same area I heard the ffwit again of the hornets. I stopped in my tracks and swiveled my head from side to side looking up into the sky trying to sight the pests. No, I did not see any insects again but what I did see really freaked me out.

Far away on the other side of the creek, close to the railroad tracks and trees were two guys. They were too far away to see very well, but one looked like he had a gun up to his shoulder and immediately I knew what sort of hornet was flying by. It was a 22 hornet.

I made a ninety degree turn and walked briskly to the creek to get out of the line of fire. Swinging wide I would the arc back to the railroad tracks. Cuming back around from their rear, when I got within a hundred feet or so yelled over to them to let them know I was there. They turned to see me and when I got to them, I said to them I had been over across the creek on the rise in the direction they had been firing and hear the whizzing of the bullets close to me.

They about freaked out since they were not aware anyone was over in the fields and had not been looking farther than their targets a way away. After they apologized profusely, I said to them that I was going to go back over the railroad tracks behind them and walk in that field and to NOT fire in that direction.

While in the field over the railroad tracks, I found a number of points, the best was a drill and a nice knife laying very close to each other, made of the same flint.

The next day I was back in the fields and decided to finish the field I had been in when the bullets started to fly close to me. Within about 2o minutes I found a bullet in the dirt.

That's pretty scary. Glad you were unscathed, and got some nice keepsakes.

That's scary stuff! Glad you dodged the bullets and found some points. There might be skeletons in that field now.

I had a similar experience. I was walking a plowed field along the IL River near Pearl IL. I kept hearing something but didn’t know what it was. Then I heard the bullets going through some trees cutting the leaves. Finally I figured it out. The shooters were clear on the other side of the River completely out of sight, at least a mile away. They were far enough away that the pop of the rifle didn’t sound like it was even connected to the bullets whizzing by. I jumped in my truck and moved on. I was finding points too. 😫😫I never made it back to that field.

Had bullets landing in my back yard years ago. Seems some idiots were in a wash target shooting, with the target near the top of the wash, we lived about a mile away. Should have called the sheriff, but instead found them and informed them what was going on.

I don't recall hearing the report of the gunshot.

Some folks just don't think about what they are doing except the immediate action.
