Wow, those vertical uprights look so flimsy, is it safe ?

Don't worry about the safety of the support columns ... I checked the U.S. Geological Survey map for that region, and there hasn't been an earthquake in the area since last Thursday, October 29, 2009 @ 12:08 PM Pacific Time. And it was only a little one that registered @ 1.5 with an epicenter 38 miles east of Las Vegas, and about 10 miles north of the bridge. And, just for comparison, consider the 60+ earthquakes that occurred this past week in southern California where I live. So you see, there's nothing to worry about whatsoever! :tongue3:

extractor, Any pics you can add here to update are more than welcome, and thanks for your time and effort in doing it'

Piggy, they do look a little flimsy for as high as they are, But with all that rock for foundation they would have
to be safe, or they would have been enlarged accordingly, with more size and more re-bar.

sodabottle, I had no idea there were any earthquakes in that area with so many mountains. I thought all the
earthquakes were on the other side of the mountains in California. That surprises me. Maybe they should have
been made a little thicker end wider. LOL.

Thanks for all of your replies,

Ray

My understanding (from recent research :read2:) is that once the bridge is completed, the weight will be distributed equally, with most of it going to the arch part, and very little of it on the "Tooth-pick" support columns. Maybe that's what the last post meant by "compression" :dontknow:

I think I'll wait for the one millionth vehicle to pass over before I'll venture thanks.

Here is some progress.

extractor, thanks for the photo upsdate ...

There was an article on this in the paper the other day. One of the reasons is security, but the main reason is the enormous amout of traffic between Phoenix, Arizona and Las Vegas. Not to mention the jillion tourist in the area during the summer months. I'm planning a trip up there to check it out as soon as it opens, which is supposed to be this fall of 2010.

hello again extractor, thanks for the latest pic. It's looking good. I sure would like to see both those. it is quite
a marvel of engineering.

How did you make out on your trip to Arizona? I hope you did well.

Quick trip I 'll PM ya

Seamus, yup, that is what I would like to do. The closest I've to that part of the country is to visit the Grand Canyon
driving up from Sedona, Arizona. and see the Canyon from the south side.
Have a good day
