The wife and I headed up to Northern Indiana at the end of April to visit relatives and relax a bit. With old 1800's map in hand I was able to locate the site of an old school house that showed on an 1830's map. It was on the same property where a house once sat from the 1870's. The house was just recently bulldozed and there were signals, broken glass, and trash everywhere. Although I didn't find too much exciting, it was rewarding to at least have found the spot where the school once sat.

The oldest coin I could come up with was a 1919 wheat penny. :dontknow:

I found a large heavy knife, .45 lead round ball, large square nail/spike, square nails, and some spoon pieces where the school sat. I was able to locate three foundation corners and what I believe was a brick chimney.

A FEW "WHAT'S-IT'S" I could use some help on:

1) The large knife is solid metal (3 types) and weighs over a 1/2 lb. Any idea on the age of it??? I coated it with some poly after soaking in in vinegar for about 3 days.

2) Small cone shaped lead piece. Any ideas???

3) Round ball measuring .45. What gun would have fired this bullet???

A few other pictures attached of:
*Grave stone being engulfed by a tree in the old part of our 1800's cemetery in town.
*Another "Relic Retreat" birdhouse I made. This one is a 6-hole condo.
*A picture of my weiner "Sud's".

Thanks for l@@king,
MM

Hey MM, you found some really neat stuff up in Hoosier land. I wish I could help with the knife, but I have never been able to put a date on them. The oak tree growing into the headstone is sad, but interesting. I LOVE your new bird house; so creative!!!
:)
Breezie

Thanks Breezie. I remember that section of old grave stones being like that since I was a young kid in the 60's. There are some large old trees in that cemetery that have fallen over the years and damaged a lot of stones. I already bought my final resting spot there across from my Dad. I was going to bury a rubber hand on my plot as a joke so when they do eventually dig that spot they will freak out. :tongue3:

Isn't it Castor Beans in the tunnels that makes 'em skedaddle?

You are correct OD. I just saw a video on YouTube yesterday about that. Castor oil mixed with Cheyenne pepper. Heck, I'd un too! :tongue3:

NICE stuff there Dug,I so much enjoy a hunt like that myself! Pretty Decent Finds man.

GOD Bless

Chris

Thanks Chris. And not one potted meat or sardine can. :dontknow:

Love the birdhouse and nice finds also.

Thanks Mr. D. Not as cool as those lamps you make, but I'm trying. :laughing7:

Nice assortment of finds Doug. Like the old graveyard pictures. We have some old ones in the woods around my area where no one has been buried for over a 100 yrs. I like to walk through and read the headstones. A lot of young children died around this area from colora, very sad.

Thanks Mike. I may be odd, but I've always had a calming feeling visiting this cemetery since I was young. Not creepy at all.
I tried taking some pictures once of some slave graves in the woods here in NC and none of those pictures were on my camera when I got home. Another time I tried and my batteries went dead. Very weird.???

Those suckers have tunnels all over my front and back yard. Maybe if I pour gas down the tunnels?

ModernMiner, the simplest (and non-poisonous) remedy for that problem is human urine. Pee into a jar. Then use your fingers to make a small hole at SEVERAL spots in the mole-tunnel's roof. Pour a little urine into each spot. That scares away the moles (or voles) by convincing them that a large-&-dangerous critter has invaded their tunnel. Trust me, it works excellently. Because I've got dogs, I cannot use castor beans or any other poisonous substance to get rid of moles/voles in my yard.

Fascinating finds! Love the birdhouse! :headbang: Andi

Thanks Andi. My Mom called me today from Indiana all excited. She said she has birds in every birdhouse I've made for her.
Have a great week,
MM

Lots of nice relics! That sure is one large folding knife!

You even have installed a bird drinking fountain (ladle) for holding rain.

You dog looks like he is very dignified.

CBG,
YOU Sir are The Man! I have never heard that, but I will definitely be trying it. I must pee 20 times a day, so I should have enough ammo to rid the whole neighborhood of those pesky vermits. :laughing7:
Thanks a bunch,

Thanks MsBB. He's more dignified than me. :tongue3:
Funny you mentioned the ladle idea. I just gave my neighbor up in Indiana a rustic birdhouse that had a ladle attached. He had a bird in there within two days. I can't believe I hadn't thought of that before. DUH.
I'll be on the lookout for more old ladles at the flea markets and junks store.
Thanks,
Doug

Looks like you guys had a fun trip, and found a nice assortment of goodies.

So true Q. I had forgotten to mention the general service button in my post. It was late by the time I posted. That's about six now from that yard.

Any idea on the .45 cal bullet? :dontknow:

After I spoke to you yesterday I gave up on those #@&% moles.:BangHead: Those suckers have tunnels all over my front and back yard. Maybe if I pour gas down the tunnels? Hmmmm...

Looking forward to your Indian artifacts story.

The ball is distorted affecting your measurement. Could be for a .44 Colt or even post war. The package is here. Q.
