I got out swinging the CZ 21 in a park on a baseball field that is lined for soccer this fall. It started out kind of slow with a few pennies and a dime as I worked my way around the outside of the field (I will detect on the field after the soccer season is over). The city guy started mowing while I was there so I moved onto an adjacent field. The coins got better and then the mower guy finished the first field and moved to the one I was on now. So I went back to the first field. I managed to find 60 coins with a face value of $4.44, the usual can slaw, tabs, etc, an old valve stem cover, a clay marble I eyeballed in one hole with a penny, a brass whatzit, a sash lift, 3 keys and the coolest find was a copper pipe filled with lead with a hole drilled in it for a handle.

From the way the ends are flared out and angled it looks like it was used as a hammer. My best guess is it was used for driving wooden pegs. Copper and lead are way too soft to be used to drive iron pegs. If anyone knows of another use for this hammer I would greatly appreciate your input. One edge of the copper pipe has been pealed back like it was hit by a mower (it was almost on the surface when I found it).

So gas money and a few interesting finds. This is the second homemade hammer I have found in the past year. I found this iron one about 5 months ago. It was definitely used for driving steel pegs at the scout camp.

Thanks for looking and may your coil lead you to good things.

I LOVE clay marbles!!! Congratulations

I love them too. I used to dig bottles before I got my detector and found marbles all the time.

Keep swingin.

Nice finds, congrats! :occasion14: I wonder if the hammer/mallet was used in shoe making or some type of leather business?

That makes sense in a way. But shoe nails are small and the cobblers hammers usually have a small head. This hammer head is large and the way it is flared out and angled from use seems to indicate it struck something with a lot of force. I can’t think of anything in the leatherworking trade that would need that much force.

Thanks for your input and keep swingin,

I'm thinking that would be a home made "dead blow" hammer. Probably for heavier work...

Thanks for the input. That does sound possible, gruesome but possible.

Keep swingin.

Heheh! Well dead blow is not exactly how it sounds all the time. Sometimes you may need to hammer something in an environment where there can be no sparks. Sometimes you want some real force to your hammer blow without the shock on brittle items, and then sometimes you need some weight to a hammer and don't want to put dents in what you're hitting, ie. any metal harder than the lead or copper or brass used for the dead blow hammer.

That sounds right. Thanks for the clarification.
