Home depot digging tool $12.97, seems pretty sturdy. Home made probe, 36" of brass probe cost $2.69 ( enough for 3 probes ), drilled 3/4 of the way into the golf ball and 2 part epoxied it in. Let me know what you think!

Good job making your own probe. I made a few with the 3/16ths brass rods and the porcelain pull knobs for ceiling fans (I got those at Walmart).
I've been told (because I don't probe) that with the porcelain knob, you can tell the difference between small rocks and coins.
Don't make your probes too long though or they'll bend. Also, round off the probe tips so it doesn't scratch you coins.

Again...way to use your hands!

Hi you can build a probe from 1/4" brass rod & a Golf Ball
also & epoxy them together.

Glad to see someone else doing the golf ball grip probe. Made my first one a few years ago from balls washed up on the beach (course near by)

hey Dex - I seen that same tool at Lowe's and was curious about it. Have you been happy with it so far? Does it have a pretty sturdy build to it?

i have that same digger, cept i paid 18$ for mine @ ace hardware. (shucks) anyways, it's really sturdy, sawtooth edge on one side and knife edge on the other. also has depth gauge. the only drawback to this digger is the double tipped point cause rocks, sticks, roots and things like to get stuck tween them. i quickly remedied this with a grinder knocking the sawtooth side tip off and rounding
