I dug this this past weekend at an old homestead in the woods. I thought for sure I had my first large cent, but upon closer inspection, I'm not sure what it is. It is slightly larger in diamter than a large cent, but thinner. It has a hole in the center and a slight bump around the hole (hence I'm thinking button?). Also the edge is lightly reeded, but only on one side.

That's good to know and brings up a good point. Most people may think that dark colors may be bad when photographing objects. Not true. Many times I use black and it works great. Sometimes I use red with good results. I assume the blue you were using was a light blue and the camera really couldn't tell the difference.

There are several things you can do to help tell if your camera is giving you a good, well-exposed image. The best may be to put something in the photo that will serve as a reference for the exposure. It can be a clad dime. If you can see the details of the dime and the dime is not dark or shiny, you have a good image to work with. An untarnished penny is also good.

If the image is good, then you can tweak it with your photo software to get it just right.

Here are a few images on dark backgrounds taken in natural light and artificial light. Don't be afraid the object will get lost. It won't.

Hope this helps.
