Sanford was an important element in early Florida development. Just east of Sanford is Lake Harney..there was a railroad from Lake Harney to Sand Point in Titusville. From Titusville, travelers took boats down the Indian River as far as Jupiter.

I have been wanting to hunt in Sanford on the North end of town where the old docks used to be. Sanford was the destination for many steam ships during the late 1800's. I had driven through once with my bride and looked around, but they had some of the road blocked off for an event. Looking at the big park on the South side of the road, I wouldn't really feel safe there hunting by myself.

In driving through on Saturday, I drove down the main street where the old docks used to be. The old pilings are still there. The whole area by the down town has been renovated and landscaped. It looks really nice. It is only marred by the hundred or so locals that still sit on the sea wall fishing. The sea wall itself looks fairly recent (last few decades)

I think the area has seen some pretty serious earth works in the past few decades. I learned that the marina was actually recently buillt in 1966/67 by dredging the lake.

I stopped where I marked on the map, which was a fisherpersonless section with some old dock pilings. The F75 was going nuts with targets, but all I could find were bottle caps and the like. I think that looking for old steamship passenger coins is probably a waste of time. Finding out other areas where the passengers may have congragated before and after voyages might be a great hit.

Seen some old pics of steamboats at those docks, always wanted to dive that site with my metal detector. Probably be some old bottles there too. As stated previously, Sanford was a major hub for commerce and transportation in the past. I'm sure there must be some great finds to be found in that area above and below the water!

If you go to your left along the lake you will have to turn right on mellonville follow it 3 - 4 blocks I think and the fort was right there on left. Used to be a vacant lot and a marker but now a house is on it and I think marker is removed, good luck

The Fort was a little further east on the land where the old hospital, now, city admin bldg is located.

Where 17/92 turns West at the South end of the lake, about a 1/4 mile is an abandoned field with a structure on it. I drove in to take a look, it seems to be an old shooting range. Does anyone know if that is the case?

I just realized I turned you a left along the lake and you should of gone right telling you how to get to the old fort. Lake Monroe will be on your left as you drive, once you pass the old hotel which is on your right you will come up to where you have to turn right. As someone else also said you will pass the old hospital on your right which is now seminole county offices. Once you get pass the old hospital. it is either that LH corner of your next intersection or the next the fort was on. It will be on the Lake Monroe side also. I am sorry that I accidently gave you a wrong turn along the water. All those parks, etc you will pass on your right before you get to the old hotel have been there since before the early sixties I know since I played there then.

I wouldn't swim there if you paid me. I used to take 17-92 around the lake every morning at around 8:00 am. I was going east into sanford to go to work in Longwood. When I got to the lake I played a game called count the gators. Every morning I counted well over 30 gators in that stretch, some of which were huge. Nope not getting me in that water, no way.
