Doing a little cleaning up around here and found these wrapped in plastic wrap.

Still surviving after all these years.

I wonder how many old timers can't remember EXACTLY what they were doing when this happened.

Boy, I know I do. I was sitting in Math class and the principal came in the door in tesrs.
It was almost five minutes before she could say what had happened.
Then it was chaos.

I was in 6th grade. We were just coming in from lunch and Dennis what's his name said "The President's been shot!" He had one of those new-fangled transistor radios (an eon ago, eh?). Then when we got back to class, the teacher sat us down and told us. Most of us were so shocked we couldn't even cry (except for Peggy W who couldn't quit with the crying).

And my mom saved the newspapers for that day too. Since we lived in Denver, it was the exact same paper shown in the original post. That was a jolt.

I remember that moment, day and weekend , like it was yesterday ..I was 12 years old (7th grade). We heard the news through the school hall grapevine, changing classes. The homeroom teacher at the end of the school day, got all teary eyed, and slowly and emotionally gave us the news, as if she was telling us something we hadn't heard yet, that everyone knew for at least an hour, already. I stupidly said something smart, like, "Thanks for the news.", and she went after me, with darts in her eyes.. I was embarrassed to say the least, as I was trying to cope with the situation with a little misplaced levity. The entire weekend and into Monday my family watched the TV, without a break, eating sandwiches sitting on the floor, with stunned faces all, tearing at each new development, funeral, etc.,, and in shock. The Oswald assassination (Live) in the middle of all this emotion, was a powerful moment within a shock.

Boy, those look like they're in great shape! That is one historical event that I've always been intrigued by. My mom was pregnant with me when Kennedy was shot. I remember it well! ;D That is one of those events in history where you remember exactly where you were and what you were doing (providing you were actually born at the time)!

I also remember standing on the steps of the post office when a stranger approached me and told me the Space Shuttle Challenger had exploded, killing all on board. Unfortunately, I no longer remember the date that occurred. Funny how people seem to come together, even total strangers, when tragedy strikes all of us....then we return to our own little sphere of influence once the initial shock wears off.

Thom, thanks for jarring my memory. Those old newspapers are quite collectible.

The day of the shuttle disaster, I was taking a plane from Miami to New York, with a stop in Tampa. The pilot said to look out the right windows. Three over-weight ladies from the other side of the plane, came to look at the shuttle take off through my window. We watched the shuttle rise, and then poof! Lots of smoke, at our eye level. I first thought the first stage, or whatever, separated and that was the cause of the ball of smoke, but I kept watching for the shuttle to emerge out of the smoke, but it never did. I could just see those octopus shaped smoke tales heading towards earth. Around 10 seconds after the appearance of the smoke, the jet scarily leaned really quickly, but righted itself in a few seconds. I thought it was because most of the passengers was on the right side. The pilot finally announces, that the Shuttle had "a major malfunction."What the heck does that mean?"..We land at Tampa, and they tell us all to disembark, which was unusual, and wait in the full glass walled lounge and bar. I head to the bar for a drink, and there on their TV is the exact same live scene of the explosion we see in the sky through the windows, and then is when I found out what exactly happened. I then realized that the jet, when we quickly leaned over, was hit by a shock wave from the shuttle blowing up. I guess we were the closest in the world to see this disaster. I always wondered if our plane should have been there at all. Funny, I don't remember the date, though, just the time of year.

Was getting a haircut when the announcement came on the TV...

Glad I wasn't getting a shave :icon_scratch:

That is a truly unbelievable story. Thank you for sharing it. I was working in a grocery store when Challeger exploded. I was standing infront of the donut counter (shocker there) when I heard the news over the intercom.

Cool find! I wonder how many of us saved the newspapers from 9-11? I did.

Kennedy: It was 2 days before my tenth birthday. I was in fifth grade standing by my teacher's desk while she explained some math problem to me. Another teacher came in and told her. She then told the class. Some kids were crying as we left school. I recall it not affecting me much one way or the other.

The space shuttle: Some of us at work went outside to watch it head up into the sky. All of a sudden all these spirals of smoke started appearing. You knew something went wrong. We went back inside and heard the news. I felt so sad the rest of the day.

9/11 --- I was sleeping in late when a good freind called me saying they have blown up the world trade tower by ramming it with a plane --get up turn on your tv !!! I told him to quit screwing around he said --I'm serious --so I turned on my tv and watched in horror as I saw the second plane hit and saw the towers fall and people jumping to avoid being burnt to death- if I could have gotten my hands on those that planned / did that vile deed -- their end would have been long in coming and very painful. I still think of now and then .

my wife was a school teacher here in florida when the shuttle blew up -- they had it on tv -- being it was a teacher going into space -- the horror of it happening live on tv shook up those 3rd to 5 th grade kids badly --her too I might add. -- I took part in the recovery of it --got photos of the some of the wreckage we recovered --- once we came in govt boys wanted all cameras and photos -- totaL BLACK OUT news wize --- I keep my camera and did not develop it for a couple years -- hey its a part of my life history what I did and where I went

Afternoon,

Well soon we will be sitting across the negotiating table with those responsible.....I am certain those who died that day will rest easier knowing that. >:(

Congratulations upon finding those newspapers.

As to the "big three" events of our history, I was in school for all 3 of them:

In 1963, in the 4th grade. Same story as many others, the teacher came in and told us. I'll always remember that one kid said, "good, my family was for Nixon" and was harshly reprimanded by the teacher. We went home early. I had worn a JFK mask on Halloween, just a few short weeks before. I kept that mask and it is now worth about $50.

In 1986, I was now the teacher, giving a semester final exam in a high school class. When the news came, via a colleague, I let the final exam conclude, then made the announcement to the class.

In 2001, I met my carpool to go to school and was informed then as to what was happening. We kept the tv in my classroom on all day and watched in silence.

I kept the newspapers to all 3 events, and several more. Someday maybe I'll pass them on to my grandchildren.

Mike
