So with the help of historic maps, I tried to track down a certain cellar hole. I knew where it was sort of. While walking through the woods, I almost fell in this well.

Then I started to look around for the cellar. I found it 50 ft away, almost didn't see it.

Then I started looking, here's what I found

I like the damper,I think its got a neat design and I think the spoon is silver plated. Got to go back when its not raining, there must be coins out there . I also saw a rear axle for model t , a little big to carry though.
Not sure why the last pic wound up on bottom?

Looks like it has some good potential. For those wells in the woods I keep some surveyors tape on me and place some streamers around it so others don't fall into them. (hint) If you place them low to the ground it wont easily give up your site to others looking for a place to detect.
I expect you will find some nice coins around there for sure.

Love those New Hampshire cellar holes! Wells are very easy to find (because you almost fall into them :laughing7:), but we tend to hide the cellar foundations in old stone walls. Know what I mean? How many of us have driven by what we think are stone walls, in the woods, and then find out they're actually cellar holes? I know it's happened to me.

Interesting finds. Yes, you definitely have to go back there to see what else you can find. Good luck on your next hunt...and be careful of those wells...they'll get you every time!

if your finding brass items and items like the spoon - chances are no ones been there - keep at it

Yes , this cellar hole did look like a stone wall on the hill from the road. I've seen it at least 6 times but thought it was nothing.

That piece of spoon says sterling near where its broken.

There is more there.. Dig it out archaeology style (but with metal detectors).. You will find more stuff.. Dig deep and wide.

Hi, new to detecting and have been doing a lot of reading here. I am confused about the cellar holes. A response a little up said about hiding them in walls. What exactly does that mean? Were they actually cellars for homes that aren't really part of the foundation and found away from the home?

What they mean is that you might think its just a stone wall from the road but when you get up close you see its a cellar. I hope you enjoy the Hobby.8-)

That's a good thing, that you didn't fall in! Keep going back you'll find more stuff!
