Note: Edited with corrected info, thanks Silver Searcher!

Spent the weekend detecting in the Field of Dreams with fellow TNet-ers Greylock, Casper, Worldtalker, and BrokenKnee.

Saturday's hunt was phenomenal with 4 silvers and a sweet Indian Celt. Checked another American Silver off my list with the 1853 Seated Half dime (too bad I nicked it), got a 1890 Seated Dime, a 1853 3-Cent Silver, and a Colonial Silver ring (no markings). Best find of the day for me was the Indian Celt. Its in really nice shape for being found in a plow zone. Found the baby turtle in the middle of the field, looked like the plow disturbed the nest. Unfortunately, it was too late to save him.

Today I managed a few more goodies. My very first signal of the day was a sweet 1753 (I think) King George Copper. After about another 3 feet I got a faint blip that sounded and read like can slaw. I've dug a lot a great targets at this location that sound like trash, so I decided to dig it. I flipped the dirt pile over, scanned it with my AT-Pro and got a solid 52 in the pile. My first handful held the signal. I saw the shimmer of silver as I looked though the dirt. A second look and I saw a cross staring at me. I though I had found my first Spanish Cob, but it was too thin for that. Upon a closer inspection, I could tell that the coin wasn't Spanish, I was looking at a Charles 1st Hammered Silver Penny! Got a few nice buttons, a couple Crotal Bells and some other cool stuff that I'll post later on.

I can't believe I just found an early 1600's English Hammered Silver coin in Western Massachusetts! This coin was found in the same field that I found my Oak Tree Shilling and 4 or 5 William III Coppers. The area was settled in the 1650's.

Can anyone give me anymore specific information on this coin? I will try to get some better pics once I get the dirt off.

Incredible Finds ! Could you put up more pics of the ring ? that would be a rare find if "period "

I'll try to get some more of the ring in natural light tomorrow. I might be able to get some up tonight though...

What an amazing weekend you had. Killer coins and relics. Don't get much older than that either. Not to mention the good company. Whatever that coin turns out to be its still an awesome find and even tho I got skunked today I was glad to have seen it in hand. Me and Casper hit two other fields after you left but nothing really just a tombac. I'm putting a banner vote on that coin. Even though it doesn't have a definite ID we just don't see them up this way. Oh and I'm glad it was the AT Pro that sniffed it out. Congrats again and hope we can get out a few more times before winter hits. Hopefully out this way.

Jason if I can pick my jaw off the ground again, well done mister! If we get out there next week I'm giving you $100.00 to play the lottery for me cause your just that lucky. Nice find HH till next time.

Its not Sterling as far as I can tell, maybe coin silver...

WOW that is the Field of Dreams.. NICE SILVER SAVE !

Still can't believe the stuff that comes out of those fields. Especially the past two weeks. You've had a great comeback since your summer break. Congrats again

Copper is normal. Strange how the corrosion can play tricks like that, but not a surprise as like I said the genuine looking ones don't tend to have any real bad errors.

Here is a listing of the various mint marks for Charles I coinage (hope it's legible). I'm no expert on this, but depending on the variety it could be on the obverse, reverse, both, or possibly none at all. But if you can find one of these on your coin it should allow you to zero in on the date a lot better. And knowing which mint it came from would be very cool. Now I have the motivation to check for these on the hammereds I've dug too. Hope this helps.

Congrats on that old oldie.
That's quite the site you got going there.

Now THAT's a great day!

Congrats on the USA-Recovered Hammered!!!

Thanks for the ring close ups ! - are you fairly sure that it's silver ?- appears a bit brassy (the greenish cast in the lower two pics ?)

Wow, that really is a field of dreams. Incredible range of time periods for those coins. Definitely an unusual one to cross off your list. Congratulations.

Too bad you nicked the half dime, but it happens. I nicked a nice Classic Head LC a week or two ago. :BangHead:

I'm not certain if it's silver, but it sounds and reads like silver on my detector. Also, there are some scratches on the sides showing the underlying metal, and it sure looks silver to me. The patina on some silver coins at this site is very odd, and who knows what the ring could be alloyed with. Natural light will make for better photos tomorrow.

I have certainly seen some odd patina's and tarnishes on silver before - so it may well be ! I hope it is , keep us posted .

I'm sure there is more out there just waiting for us! Thanks for the Banner vote! Maybe if there weren't so many other incredible finds posted this weekend it would have stood a shot ;).
