Got out for a few this evening. Surface hunting a usually good producing site. Didn't even find a scraper. But I did find this rock. I know how you all like looking at rocks so I'm posting it. I find these types of rocks from time to time. I should put them all in one place together because I keep them. Whenever I find these they are broke. But they are flat both sides, seem to have polish or abrasion use, and also seem to be squared off. The ones I have are not all the same material and if im thinking right all usually seem to have a speckled patina? Since I am no rock expert like some here :laughing7: I would like some "professional" :laughing7: opinions.

i am probably wrong but it looks like a corner piece broke off a counter top...........

i know how we find tiles and pcs of brick etc in fields but this was pretty deep in what was until 3 months ago deep forest way up on a ridge unless it was a counter top that some nice giant beaver steaks were prepared on i might have to disagree with ya larson. If I can catch a break here today im gonna try to dig up similar pcs to post.

Here you go SOHIO. I find these pieces of catlinite (pipestone) in the fields I hunt in Minnesota/North Dakota. Worked on the edges, but not on the faces. I don't know if they were getting these pieces ready to make pipes, pendants, tablets (notice the dog and feather),etc. Thickness is usually between a 1/2" and 1". Do you have catlinite in your area?

Actually, Catlinite is only found in Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota, and that general area. We do have Pipestone, or Fire Clay, here in Ohio and there is a huge deposit of it with 15 miles of my house, but true Catlinite is not found in Ohio.
