Ok without particular questions to answer I would advise getting a copy of Army Field Manual 21-26 Map Reading and Land Navigation. This is a good manual that starts with the basics and works from there. Keep in mind that it teaches the Military Grid Reference System so you will have to overlook that part. It breaks down what all the lines mean, how to regonise certain features and such. Can find them on Ebay for 3 - 4 dollars. I may have one I will send you but I need to look in the garage. I think we can be more helpful here. All the main squigly lines all over the map are gradient lines, they define elevation usually but not always in 20ft increments. Also note the closer the lines are together the steeper the terain. Most other features of topos are self explanatory, rivers look like rivers, streams brooks etc.. Lakes look like lakes, you get the idea. There should be a key on your map a special place or box that defines what each symbol stands for. Hope this helps. ;)
