Virginia State Seal 2-piece brass buttons with the "Scovills & Co. / Waterbury" backmark in raised lettering date from precisely 1840 to 1850. The dating is that precise because the pre-existing Scovill company (JML & WH Scovill) changed its name to Scovills & Co. in 1840, and changed it in 1850 to Scovill Manufacturing Company.

I found four of them in a trunk at a old farm house. This one is probably in the worst shape.

I don't know how to label this thread as solved from my ipad.
