Help with signature

I wouldn't think so
Its likely the owner of the book tagged the book so the person he loaned it to would know who owned it
its that, or - read the book and see if the name shows up
IMO

The signature apparently belongs to AMM 3/c MERLE MARTIN SHOWERS, who served on the USS Gambier Bay and was mentioned in the book.

Nice job Kieth.

The USS Gambier Bay was one of the escort carriers that was part of Taffy 3 at the Battle off Samar. If you're not familiar with it you should be. True American Heroes. An anti-submarine screen left behind when the big ships and carriers went off to what became the Battle of Midway. The largest but most lopsided of Naval battles ever; can't say they won but they confused and turned the Japanese Center Force (four battleships including the Yamato) and saved a lot of troops and sailors at Letye, and likely Midway and in the Philippines if the Japanese had continued on. The USS Johnston destroyer (with five 5" guns) charged Japanese battle ships and cruisers and Commander Evans received the Medal of Honor posthumously.

"Destroyer" sounds like a fierce ship but the battleship Yamato weighed 24 times (!) what the Johnston did.
