Hi folks - any opinions on the date on this very rough shield nickel?
My first pre-1900's nickel!

I also recently found an odd object - the portion that looks like the head of a hammer spins and has a spring inside of it (so a clip of some kind) the piece at the other with the hinge still opens and closes ... pretty neat.

Thanks in advance!

Funny how the card holder idea is always refuted by showing a patent or display selling them as cuff adjusters.

Reality - If you were a card shark, you would always be at risk of being exposed. Bad news if you had a card holder up your sleeve.

"No, no, ... this isn't a card holder, gents. It's just a cuff adjuster. Everyone knows that. See, I have one on the other cuff also."

Modern authenticators insist they were not card holders.
Card sharks insisted it, even harder. So, there we have it. Everyone agrees these were only cuff adjusters. :angel12:

The original patent tells a lot. It tells when it was first invented and for what purpose and described in extreme detail. They are in my 1909 Sears Roebuck catalog as cuff holders. Montgomery Ward sold them as cuff holders. They were apparently extremely popular clothing attire. My guess somebody at a much later date didn't know what they were. Who knows how rumors get started but the original patent and the old catalogs always trumps a rumor. Whether someone ever tried to use a 10 cent Sears cuff holder to cheat in a poker game is unknown. I suppose its possible. I suppose its also possible someone tried to hide a card with a tie clip or garter clip.

It's hard to explain. I'm hoping this might help a little ?

These are license plate covers.
We know this because the patents show them as license plate covers.
We can show them commonly marketed, displayed, advertised and available as license plate covers.
We all agree these are license plate covers.

Therefore we conclude: Nothing to do with traffic cameras
