I went back to the field where I found the 44 rimfire casing and found four more that I need help aging.
They are all centerfire and at least one looks to be fairly modern.

F
The first one is a rifle shell that has 8 A stamped on the base.
17

The next wto are 38 casings but one is larger than the other. The first is marked 38 S&W UMC. The second is marke 38CFW UMC. And the last is marked 32 S&WL REM-UMC. The next to last picture shows the two 38s together.

The one marked FA is Frankford Arsenal (Philadelphia, PA) and 8 17 would be Aug 1917. The CFW UMC one is a Center Fire Winchester made by Union Metallic Cartridge Company. That's the extent of my knowledge, somebody will be along soon to fill in all the blanks I left.

Mike,
thanks for the info. I can't figure out why one 38 is larger than the other.

FA 8 17 is Frankford Arsenal August 1917. Based on your dimensions the caliber could be 30-40 Krag but not positive. I'm making the assumption that part of the length in missing. The overall length of the Krag was appro 2.3” with approx 1.8” before the neck taper.

.38 CFW UMC is a 38-40 Center Fire Winchester produced by Union Metallic Cartridge Co. A necked-down cartridge, the 38-40 was first produced in the 1880's by Winchester. UMC would have been introduced a little later. Yours, maybe 1890's-early 1900's?

.38 Special produced by Union Metallic Cartridge Co. 1899-1911.

.32 caliber Smith & Wesson Long produced by Union Metallic Cartridges after being bought by Remington Arms. REM-UMC first used in 1912. Yours, probably 10's-early 30's.

Right on, the .32 S&W is from at least 1932. My Great GrandPaw was a Detective in WV, I have his Nickel Plated H&R .32Long Revolver. His was bought in 1932 when my PawPaw was born, and we still have a box of original Ammo.

Thanks for all the excellent information. My only remaining question is why are the two 38 casings different diameters? Is it just the manufacturer, the weapon they were made for or something else?

The 38 special is a straight case. The 38-40 has a "necked down" case for that 38 caliber bullet. Check out the pics.

The Frankford Arsenal casing is rimless, making it a 30-06 not a 30-40 Krag which is a rimmed cartridge. Sometimes those green checks show up a bit early.

Thanks for the additional info. I un-checked it and re-checked it to make it legit! :laughing7:
