Help with button identification

I found this button at a civil war skirmish site. It's brass and in block lettering on the front says LE CLAIRON. I have been unable to identify it.

Looks like a shirt snap - which would make it newer instead of older... I would guess mid to late 20th C.

Possibly c. early 1900s or so glove button. Here is an ad from 1902 for Le Clairon kid gloves. Also a link to a listing for a glove button of another design but with a similar construction. I also included a scan from the National Button Bulletin, Nov 1956 that shows some glove buttons. I didn't see this one in the photo but there are some others which are similar.

I would also think 1900-1920 as the lettering appears to have serifs. Good research Bramblefind.

I think I researched snap patents and discovered these snaps were older than we thought.
