Went and checked out a new dot on a 1878 map today that is on my bosses property and indeed found a old home site. Lots of square nails and bits of iron at it, but back in the back a ways I came across a broken brass stirrup and a few other relics that got me to wondering if maybe the site might have originally been a military camp. I know the road that runs past the place was a military road during the civil war, and that there were no houses in the area before the war for it was Indian territory before and during the war.
Now I have never dug in such places before and never have found any civil war era relics except a three ringer bullet a half a mile away surface hunting from the tractor. Question is to those with more experience than me, do the items shown look anywhere like civil war era stuff? And would such kittle fragments even be used by the military? The stirrup and buckle were just a foot apart and the big handle kittle piece was 6ft away. The other little piece was another 50ft away. Any thoughts on age appreciative. 20210422_202007.jpg

Missing the top... which would make it hard to pin down exact...

Looks like a great spot... I would be out there like a flea on a dog.

Go back... find more... post pics.

PS...

Buckle looks interesting... can't say i have seen this one.

Thanks AARC for the reply. Yes it would have been nice to have found the stirrup whole but no such luck. I figured I would at least post and hope for the best. Will get back to the site once I have time to hook up the brush hog for though it is pasture, it was not the easiest to swing a detector on. Indeed I want to do a systematic search of the area for I can already tell it is a older site then I am use to working.
