Just my 2 cents here on models for beach detecting. I use a Whites Treasuremaster PI 1000 and have had amazing success with this machine in the salt water. I usually go out to about 6 or 8 feet of depth with my flippers, mask and snorkel and troll around the water. This model detector is very old but a very good one at that, the only problem is that it is a "Dig All" detector meaning it will not discriminate and it will detect ANY metal. That is the reason I stay away from the shoreline, WAY TOO MANY BOTTLE CAPS and junk near the shoreline. By the way, why do people throw out used batteries in the water, I just don't understand that. PI detectors are the way to go fro me in the salt water, I have dug jewelry and coins at 10+ inch's of depth. Never-the-less there is always a ton of junk to be found but I guess that is par for the course. Stay with the highly populated areas of beach and go on Monday mornings after a busy weekend during the low tide times.
