I'm helping a friend ID this buckle. It looks to me to be old but not period for the Civil War. Mexican War?? It also looks to be horse tack rather than part of what a soldier would wear. It is solid brass - measures 3 1/4" wide and 2 1/8" tall.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Daryl

There is a stamped #7 and then the writing from what is either a grease pencil or a crayon that appears to be a 2.

I think this one is a repro perhaps. I have never seen attachments like that on the back of Any buckle from the 1800s.

Me either but I haven't seen that much horse stuff.

And what would it be a repro of?

I have seen a good bit of the horse stuff, but I don't recognize that attachment at all--and the piece appears to be very poorly cast. It is about the same size as a baby US buckle. If it is a saddle or horse tack piece, it is 20th c. I feel certain...

Looks to me like it is a solid cast replica, although the detail is poor, of a US buckle, and it's meant to sit on the prongs, maybe as a paperweight or desk ornament.

My thoughts too but I couldn't figure out what it was a repro of??? Sort of looks like a latch for a chest or something. :dontknow:

Thanks for the help.

I think they were trying to make a belt buckle. Obviously the makers didn't know what the hooks on the back were supposed to look like. There are some real doozies on Savage's website. Breezie

I agree that there are some really bad ones on there but none of them have the "hinge-like" thing and a post. Still :dontknow:

Poorly made, attachments are wrong, either it's rare or it's rotten! ;D

Well, let's see:
1) We know it is not an authentic Civil War period anything
2) It is too crudely cast to be of military issue or use .. this is a very poor casting!
3) the prongs on the back are not consistent with, nor do they lend themselves to, any type of attachment or locking device, and there would be absolutely no application in the harness/horse tack arena.
4) about the only application that I can see for those prongs would be to either secure it into something like cement, or as legs to set it onto something like a table or desk.
