Hello everybody!!!,
I recently picked this jacket up,For a few reason's..One being it's cool!,No just joking but cool none thr less...The button's are HORSTMANN BROS.PHILA. and based on Horstmann data base the button's date from 1850-1865,My main question is IF this is a civil war era jacket who wore it? A wealthy child?? A military cadet???(although unlikely as a females name is stiched inside.)
Largest button is appox.15MM.
For it's age jacket is in pretty good shape,ANY HELP on this will be GREATLY appreciated,HAPPY HUNTING ALL:thumbsup:!!!

Awesome jacket! Did you try to run down the name?

My very first thought was "child's winter coat made from a man's pea-coat".

My in-laws were old enough to have been in the Japanese-American internment camps during WWII. Since they were moved from California (where you don't own a winter coat) to other places (like Arkansas) you had to make do with whatever you could get to keep the kids warm. I've seen 2 child's winter coats from that era made from cut down military surplus pea-coats.

I hate to think that's what happened with "grandpa's coat from the rebellion", but it is a possibility. Also could simply be re-purposed buttons.

I believe that back mark dates a bit later than your source indicates. It is one of those often misquoted online (if that is your source), but I believe it would date 1875/1880 up to 1893, noting that the the A in Phila is underlined.
Still a very cool little jacket.

[FONT=&quot]Sally Ann Flynn POOLE was born on October 8, 1920 in Fargo, North Dakota. She Lived in Erie, Pa. 1976.

If this is the coat owner, that would make it a depression era garment.

There was a time when it was "chic" to dress your child in military dress. I'm thinking early to mid 1800's. Tony
