I am very new to metal detecting and could use some advise....I have been fortunate to be handed down my grandmothers
engagement ring and wedding band. I have been wearing the wedding band four years now...5 diamonds set in platinum. It's a very special ring in that it has a lock mechanism that when 'unlocked' you are able to push the ring over your knuckle and then 'lock' it in place. I noticed that the lock was loose and asked my husband to bring it to the jewelers to have it tightened. Well, he's lost it. He
took the day off from work yesterday and searched the house, the yard, the driveway, his work area etc. and has so far come up empty
handed...bought a metal detector last night and will continue searching today after putting in a couple of hours at the office and before the rains come. forecast for Friday is rain.
Any advice for us newbies? Anyone have any luck in finding a ring, once lost?

first let me say welcome to our world....good job finding the ring....now to the new hobby you have gotten into...you said the local club disbanded due to lack of interest....sounds like you guys may be some of the very few MDers in your area.....that can be taken 2 ways....(1) you may not be able to locate a hunting partner.....or (2) nobody else detecting leaves more treasure for you to find!!!

Good luck and Happy Hunting

Yes, the Northern Virginia detectors club disbanded due to lack of interest - but, there is one in Maryland which I think we could join.
There is a Northern Virginia Relic Hunters Club that may be a similar group, but, I haven't looked into that yet.
I know it is illegal to use metal detectors on battlefield sites - those posted with signage - but, there is so much land here that isn't part of the local park service which was trodden during the Civil War.
Our first step will be to get a map and then head out in the spring time - by which time one boy will be 3 and the youngest will be walking.
Never too early to learn about our nation's history!

Well, I'm gald you found the ring. Now get a metal detector, and get out there and dig some relics!!! (what am I saying..inviting competition) :D :D

Great news, once again.
