I am very new to metal detecting and could use some advise....I have been fortunate to be handed down my grandmothers
engagement ring and wedding band. I have been wearing the wedding band four years now...5 diamonds set in platinum. It's a very special ring in that it has a lock mechanism that when 'unlocked' you are able to push the ring over your knuckle and then 'lock' it in place. I noticed that the lock was loose and asked my husband to bring it to the jewelers to have it tightened. Well, he's lost it. He
took the day off from work yesterday and searched the house, the yard, the driveway, his work area etc. and has so far come up empty
handed...bought a metal detector last night and will continue searching today after putting in a couple of hours at the office and before the rains come. forecast for Friday is rain.
Any advice for us newbies? Anyone have any luck in finding a ring, once lost?

Hi T.

although it dosn't really Matter.
What type of Detector ?

one thing you want to be sure is that you have it set to detect everything.

The nice thing, you won't need to do any digging. it should still be on top of the ground.

IF you have another ring, of the same approximate size & Conent,
or can find someone with one. Test the detector with it.
this may help you Pick out what it should Sound like to the detector.

Another thing, there is nothing like Expierence.
If you say where you are, there may be a member here
who would be more then happy, to stop by & help.

Keep the coil flat to the ground as you sweep, don't lift at either end of the swing. Sounds like it could be anywhere, the metal detector will only help in the grass, flowerbeds, etc.

Try setting a few different targets in the yard including a ring that is similar in size and materials to your lost ring. Try sweeping over each to get a feel for the sound of the ring.

Best of luck, hope you find it! :)

Do you know for sure it was lost outside? All pockets/hems been searched?Washing machine? Find any pawn ticket? Car seats/floorboards?Gloves?

Thank you all for the replies! My husband did a thorough search both inside and out yesterday and will go out again today with the metal detector. He tested the detector with various metals and another platinum item so that he would be able to identify the sound. Luckily, he noticed it was missing before he left the house - It shouldn't be far - Right?

Yes it Sounds like it.

My Nephew Called me a couple weeks ago. He lost his Wedding ring.
i TOLD HIM i'D PACK UP & HEAD RIGHT DOWN.

By the time I was packed, he called back.
He found it wedged under a rock about 10 - 15 Feet from where he Thought he dropped it.

My point being Items can fly fruther then you think.
Tell him don't just check along his path of travel, but
make sure to Widen the Path of search at least triple on each side.

Rain and time really mean very little in recovering something like that, and I've found a few
rings for people in the past.
But the truth is, if you are sure you lost it outside, and in a place you know you will find it
with a metal detector, then the really best advise is to find someone with experience using
a metal detector. Truly, lack of experience will get you.... well not very far.

I was out one day hunting and a man approached me, he said he had lost his wedding ring
behind his house.... (thrown there in a fit of anger, to tell the truth)
He asked if I could look for it for him, he told the story of how he had rented a machine,
and tried to find the ring but it made noise everywhere, and how he thought maybe Crows had found it shiny in the yard and taken it....

I was game, so I followed him... WOW what a tiny tiny little yard.... (postage stamp size)
I turned my machine on took two sweeps of the coil, got a ring signal and looked in the grass blades, and there was the ring halve buried in the dirt, clearly not visible, but not buried either.

He offered me $50.00 for my trouble....
and I being the man I am.... graciously excepted... and took my family to dinner.

But the moral would be that when you are new to Metal detecting, then you can almost
not tell when a signal is good or bad, or just chirps from an over sensitive setting.
Someone with years under their belt will know immediately if a signal is worth digging,
or if its more likely to be trash...
Good luck to you.

Make him walk you through every step he took before he noticed it missing. You know how an extra set of eyes can help. If he is sure he lost it outside, wait till dark and sweep the area with a flashlight to catch the glint of it. I cant tell you how many times this has worked for me.
I got a call to go find a guys wedding band ,that he lost during hunting season. He was skinning his deer next to the hunting cabin and when he went to wash his hands....no ring....needless to say he was in a panic of having to return home to his wife after a week with the boys and not wearing his ring! So you know what I will be doing this weekend....

When I get a call to locate a lost ring, I talk to the person that lost it, not the spouse. I ask many question hoping to jar the memory to what they were doing, wearing, etc. before they noticed the ring was missing. Where did he put the ring before he was to go to the jewelers? Which pocket did he put it into? Did he take any thing out of the pocket at any time?

You say you told your husband to "bring" it to the jewelers. Did you give him the ring or was he to pick it up from your jewelry box sort of questions need to be answered. If I was near by I could look as I have found many lost rings, keys, even a kids retainer.

Let us know if you find it and where. It's usually just under your nose. Good Luck,
Sandman

Good morning -

No luck yet - went out with a flashlight last night and haven't found the ring. I've told my husband we should enlist the help of someone who knows what they're doing and I've gone as far as checking out the local club only to find out they have disbanded due to lack of interest. My husband is a cynical man and doesn't want to broadcast that the ring is missing.
He is also a very smart and handy guy and believes that by reading the instructional manual is covering all the bases.
My questionsfor the day is: Is there a way to search the house using the metal detector (the Discovery 1100)?
As I've mentioned, my husband is a handy guy, and one passion of his is working on cars. That said, we have alot of tools and car parts. Will the signal get lost among all the metals in his work area?

I am so appreciative to all the advice and knowledge you all have bestowed on me - Thank you

On your Question, No there is no Ralistic Way to search in the house with the Detector.

If you think about it, Your Eyes will work In your house.

Unless you got very Thick Shag Carpets or crevices It should be Lying
in View.

Maby turn out the lights & try the Flashlight Trick inside tonight.

And What about Flipping your Chairs & couch(s) & see if it is inside them ?

I don't think your metal detector will work very well in your house. Too much other metal (wires in walls, duct work, etc).

Retrace his steps. Try to narrow down if he indeed lost it indoors or out.

And you really might try a local detectorist..........I'd help. No charge. I live in Clarksville, TN.

Also Check Bushes. Maby it's hanging above Ground on a Bush.

I Don't want to invade your Privacy,

But Another Suggestion.

IF you have a Digital Camera.

Pictures of the Paths taken may give someone a clue
as to suggest a spot you may be overlooking.

The best advice has already been given. Tell us where you live and let some experienced, honest metal detectorist search outside for you. Unless your husband is ABSOLUTELY, POSITiVELY SURE he lost it inside. Then you need to walk all over the floor until you step on it or you need to turn the furniture and pots and pans upside down. Unless you have a HUGE house or you have clutter all over the floors, this should not be a big problem. The problem occurs when something is lost outside, because then some stranger can see it and walk off with it before a detectorist gets there. That is why you should have announced your city and state IMMEDIATELY ON THIS BOARD, SO WE COULD HELP YOU.
Most of us have helped others find lost items, including the police department.

Re: HELP needed -- Thank you

Thank you all for advice and well wishes - This forum renews my faith in the goodness of others

My wedding band has been found ;D

After being sure that the property, driveway and cars had been throughly canvassed - very methodically - my husband then turned his attention to the work area. He is a car buff. He began to disassemble to work bench, remove all the tools and parts, one by one - and then placed them back in their assigned spots. To no avail.

He then began the same methodical approach to the storage bins we have outside. He took one bin from the top of another and there, on the lid of the bottom bin lay the ring.

Did I mention he is a car buff? And did I also mention we have a 2 yr. old who likes to help Papa?
Well, on Tues. morning, Papa was checking the fan of a vintage car we have and young son was 'helping'. We surmise that our son picked up the ring and knowing it wasn't a tool which belonged on the tool bench, he placed it on top of the bin. A perfect height for a 2 yr. old.
The ring must have slid to the center of the lid and beneath the bin on top of it.

We've learned a few things from this.
Of course, to be more careful when transporting precious heirlooms from the house to the jeweler.
I won't remove the ring from my finger.
Our 2 yr. old is pretty smart.
And, that there is a wonderful community of people willing to share their knowledge & expertise just for the sake of Helping one another.
And, we have a new hobby we can get involved in as a family.
We live in Northern Virginia and I think the boys ( one is 2, the other just turned 1) - I know the battlefield in the surrounding areas have been hit plenty of time by hobbyists such as yourselves. - But, who knows, we may find something. And it sure will be fun to try!

Thank you all again -

T
