Found this last Saturday at one of our "hunted out" sites. I haven't been able to find one exactly like it online. I assume it's war of 1812 era but would like to know if it is or maybe earlier. Found one similar a couple years ago and no one was able to find one exactly like it either. Don't have exact measurement but it is just slightly larger than a nickel. Thanks and hope everyone is having a great week! 20160402_184952-1.jpg20160402_191450-1.jpg

I can't offer any help but definitely at the top of my wanted list. Congratulations.

HI; It is definitely War of 1812. It has Full Shank and is in Extra Fine (XF) condition. I'll get back to you with the value. PEACE:RONB

Got your message, Darby. There is no EXACT match-up for your early-1800s US Navy button in the Albert book on American uniform buttons. (Note that the eagle is standing on a Torse with 6 twists.) But Albert shows the ones with a round shield as being earlier than the spade shield varieties, so yours does date from the War Of 1812 era.

I can't quite be sure from the photo about whether there is a star directly above the eagle's head or not. Does your button have 15 stars, or 16 stars?

Just in case you don't already know... your button's backmark saying "plated" means it was silverplated.

Thank you Cannonball guy for looking. Yes there is a star above eagles head, 16 stars total. Thanks again, your knowledge and willingness to help is most admirable!

doesn't "gilt" mean gold plated?
