Help Me Pick A New Detector

I currently use an Ace 250. I am about to sell some silver and want to get another detector but I am clueless. I should have about $700-900 to spend after the sell. I mostly coin hunt old houses. I do get out and do a little civil war relic hunting and I go to the beach 2 or 3 times a year. So let's hear some recommendations. Not unhappy with the Ace, just looking for a little upgrade. A guy can't have too many machines. :)

I'm a big fan of the Minelab X-Terra series, lightweight, reliable and just a good all around detector. With your requirements of beach and relic hunting, check out the X-Terra 70.....just my 2 sents worth.

I have not used the Ace, heard it is a good detector. I bought an X-Terra 70. I LOVE it. I have 4 coils and I use them all, depending on where I hunt.

Good luck

List Christmas I spent $300 for a refurbished Cobra Beach Magnet, because it had a built in headset and was waterproof. I have been very happy with it, since you have a little more to spend, I would recommend going to the max with an American built unit||(Cobra is an import|).

I copied this from one of my posts from awhile back with the same question.

You are going to have to buy coils and other things. Look at the M6 or the MXT. Both great detectors and enough $ left to get a small coil and maybe the super 12 or a Sunray probe. That would be a great set up for the $.

My dealers regular prices and he discounts even more when you purchase multiple items. Also Whites many times have promotions going with the purchase of a detector such as a coupon towards a coil, pinpointer, headphones, diggers etc. I bought a Sunray DX1 probe and Super 12 coil at the same time. Sold me the probe for 157.92 and the Super 12 for 196.26.

MXT 679.95
M6 594.95

4X6 Eclipse DD coil 127.45
5.3 Eclipse coil 127.45
Super 12 coil 212.00
Sunray DX1 probe 170.95

Dang, I was just sitting here figuring this up and would be a fantastic set up for 1000.00
M6 594.95
4X6 or 5.3 coil 127.45
Sunray DX1 170.95
Lesche digger 42.95
Pro Gold phones 98.95

total 1,035.25 And this is before any extra discount for purchasing multiple items.

Anyway, whatever you decide, good luck to you and HH.

if i were in your shoes i think i would at least look at the MXT.

Talk to TonyinCt, he can answer all your questions, give you good advice and stear you in the direction you are looking for, PLUS give you a good deal on a new detector as well.

You can trust him, there are a lot of us on TN who have bought from him including myself and been very happy with the deal.

Lots of good detectors out there. Some good prices if you check around. I deal with Clevengers exclusively
because he is honest and has the best prices. Being old school, he doesn't have a website but you can find his name and 1-800 number on google. Just type in his name. Have him send his catalog. You'll be amazed. I'd post his phone number but I've probably gone out of bounds saying this much. No advertiseing on the forums site. :-\

i agree a m-6 is a good coin machine, xt 70's are nice and of coarse i love my t-2 and is easy to use, but not as good for coin hunting as the m-6

I am very pleased with my Minelab but they are a tough learn and kind of expensive. The Whites are awesome machines too and I believe that some of the ones mentioned in this thread fall into your range. You can't go wrong with Whites or Minelab in my opinion. Good luck and let us know what you decide on.

happy with my Xterra70 but, have my eye on the sovereign gt which would fit your limit,,,,I think
I was going to suggest you look into the Sovereign GT as well since you said you wanted to take it to the beach. The wet sand doesn't bother the Sovereign at all, of course you won't have a meter unless you buy an after market one. Don't jump too fast whatever you do and research your decision as much as possible before you buy. HH

I have Excals (2) and a Sov GT. I love both models and I personally did not find them tough to learn, it just took practice hunting. Tones were not that hard to learn to me. I sweep left to right, turn 90 degress and sweep target again left to right, if I have stillhave a solid signal--- I dig.

I also have a Whites 6000 XL PRO that I use for play grounds and parks. It is a coin and jewelry magnet.

There are quite a few very good machines to chose from. They all have their pluses and minuses. I have an MXT with a variety of coils that I have been very happy with. It is a good machine for everything from coin hunting to prospecting with a coin and jewlery setting, a relic setting and a prospecting setting. It is a bit more versatile than the M6 because of the prospecting mode and therefore worth the extra price, unless you know that you will never use the extra features. My only complaint with it is that it is a bit on the heavy side, but I have found enough goodies goodies with it to overlook that. Good luck with whatever you chose.
Dig deep and often,
Bill

Personally, with that money I would without a doubt get the nicest Explorer XS or II that I could find used. You may even land one that already comes with a sunray probe or perhaps an extra coil. Why buy a brand new X-terra when you can have a monster of a machine? And all equipment aside, for a coil the size that comes stock with the Explorer, they separate pretty well. I don't have an extra coil or sunray probe yet, and the day I do I know I'll probably do better, but as is, just the detector, I am doing pretty well. I'm not going to insult any detector owners with the following statement, but there is no point in getting a non DFX whites or X-terra series detector when you can get an Explorer for the same money. I still have and use my ACE 250, and used to read right through the Explorer posts, until I caught interest and actually used one. When you start digging coins at the depths the Explorer picks them up, then you'll know you made the right choice.

tnfishdaddy,

I'm a Tesoro dealer,if you have any questions concerning them I would be happy to help. Joe
