Help me locate a Veteran's family via found dog tag

I dug this military dog tag at an old home site a little while back. It is printed backwards. I can make out the name and all the numbers. Any idea why the letters would be backwards?

Also, what would be the best way of searching who it belonged to? I found it in my hometown, maybe the VFW would know how to trace it? Any help with this would be appreciated.

Its 1941 to the early 70's type with the notch.

You might be just a bit off on your dates. I entered the army in Feb 64 and my tags do not have the notch. So I would say he must have been in the service before the Viet Nam era.
Yes we already discussed that. The dates came from Snopes. Its all explained above in reply #23. The tag is Korean War era..

ADDED: I edited my original post so as not to keep discussing it. Thanks.

Update-

I e-mailed the local VFW to see if they could provide any info and am awaiting a reply.

I'd almost bet that his family would really like to have that tag. Especially, to put in his flag case. I know that I'd really like to have one of my Dad's to put in HIS flag case.

I'm thinking there's a list of names on the Viet Nam memorial wall in DC, no? I'm going to search that and see if he's listed..., never mind, dead end, not killed in Nam.

Re: Help me locate a Veteran's family via found dog tag

Information taken directly from Mr. Bolden's death certificate.

****
Plemon Bolden, Male, "Negro," never married.
Born: Apr. 28, 1931
Place: Granger, TX
Died: Aug. 15, 1973
Place: Highway 7, Precinct #3, Falls Co., TX
Cause of death: Hit and run by motor vehicle, "He was on Highway #7 west of Marlin"

Usual Residence: Rt. 1, Box 25, Georgetown, TX (also says "CITY: Weir, Williamson Co., TX")
Construction worker, veteran of the Korean Conflict
Informant: Hattie Bolden, mother.
Buried in Granger City Cemetery, Granger, Williamson Co., TX
****

As you can see, Mr. Bolden was never married; however, this doesn't mean he didn't have children or other living relatives at the time of his death (his mother was still living at that time, as she was the "informant"). Your best bet would be to contact a library in the vicinity of either Georgetown, Weir, Granger (which is probably where his mother was still living), or even Marlin, TX and see if they might have archives of local newspapers and would be able to find an obituary or article on or shortly after Aug. 15, 1973.

While obituaries can be hard to find (it's usually up to the family to pay for them to be put in the paper), Mr. Bolden died as the result of a crime. I'll bet there's an article out there somewhere, which would likely name his survivors (at least, as of August 1973).

No problem. As for the VFW, my experience has been that some posts are VERY good at keeping records, while others keep almost nothing at all. It's very hit-and-miss.
