help id'ing this button

Found this weekend at an old mill site. Not sure what it is made of and how much cleaning I should do. Any help greatly needed and appreciated! Back of button as corroded as front with no markings that can be seen without cleaning further. Thanks

Darby, I really can't tell if it is a button or not. Can you post some more photos; front and back after doing some cleaning? Just judging by the one pic, it looks like it could be a lead seal. Is it heavy?

Just gentle cleaning for now: a soak in soapy water and maybe a soft toothbrush at most.

I think Breezie nailed it. See if you can see the remnants of an old wire in it, used for attachment.
