Well I did some research on this button and I found a very similar design that is on this button. From what it shows, it's a pewter button from the Rev War era. Most likely civilian. I might be wrong but so far this is as close as I can find.

I'll disagree with popular opinion and go with Colonial, likely 1700s. Nice find.

Looks like one half of one half of a cufflink, not sure of the age, but almost all of my late 1700 to early 1800 cufflinks are shaped like that. Look for the other half in the general area along with the attaching link. :)

Being yours is silver, GREAT FIND!! ;)

I was going to say the same. Silver cufflink half (chain & other half missing) 100% sure

Dang! I was gonna say that--then edited my first post to go with the fray on the Victorian age ID... Looked like the same shank construction as many early buttons, esp. cast pewter. :-\
