Hi all,

I'm new here, after stumbling upon Treasurenet and falling into the blackhole that is internet forums. I have a relatively small (roughly 4" high with 4" diameter) piece of what seems to be hand-thrown pottery from an estate sale. I'm not sure if it is someone's high school art project or a work of greatness, but would appreciate any leads you could provide. The piece is matte, with only a few streaks of brown glaze near the neck. I've attached a photo of the artist's mark, if that's of any help.

Even if the answer is "that's somebody's grandma's craft project" I'd appreciate knowing more!

Thanks in advance!

Welcome! sailboatsandsunshine and fellow treasure hunter,

I would say it's modern studio art pottery sold at tourist places, fairs or an art festival. Most likely the potter is still living. If you search art pottery signature you will find that there must be a few thousand studio art potters in north America alone. I must say I see loads of nice looking art pottery like yours in antique shops and thrift stores and I am attracted to so many and most have a signature. The kind that have a legible signature would be easier to run down, but one like your will only be recognized by very few folks out there. I must say I believe I've seen that signature on the many pieces of art pottery I pick up and just look at the bottom at the signature. I never buy them, but just take a moment to admire - regard (an object, quality, or person) with respect or warm approval- of the piece. It's a nice piece of art I will say and you could start a nice collection of pottery such as yours for very little money hunting in the antique shops and thrift stores.

Keep at it as the deal of the century is out there waiting to be found :)

Thanks so much for the help, tamrock! That's what I figured and am glad to have my suspicions confirmed. I snagged it for $0.50 (since I liked the look of it anyway), so I'm not heartbroken that it isn't of any great value. Thanks again :)
