I am desperately trying to get any information on this awesome find. I have had this for about 2 years and have been sending inquires to several artifact professionals at various places to no avail. One problem could be I don't know it's origin. I found it in a cosmetic zip up bag in a old suitcase that I bought at a thrift store. I will describe it as best as I can...It appears to be very old. I believe it is a pouch made of small woven rope or thick string. It was probably soft at one time, but has become rather stiff. It has a crude wooden top, carved in the shape of a diamond, that screws into the top neck of the pouch. It contains some remnants of a fine brown powder. The photos describe better than I can. Hoping someone can help I.D. this. I think it's pretty cool. Well, damn can't figure out how to add photo files.. Tried down loading files, but then they dont show up to drag down in the area to attach. :icon_scratch:

since you found it in a suitcase, i agree with sachet/ pomander
idea keeps the bag smelling good not musty

Thing is, though it was found in a old suitcase, so where a few other things that really didnt belong in the suitcase, say for travel. It was used for storage. It had a box of Christmas cards, and some kitchen utensils in the suitcase.

Have you smelled the inside of the pouch for clues?
Does it look like it could have held gunpowder perhaps?

I have smelled it. The fine brown powder has no gunpowder smell. It just smells ever so slightly musky and just plain old smelling.

I appreciate all the responses given. I respectfully disagree about it being a Talega. Mainly because Talegas are typically made of a hard solid perforated material and also most typically are round. I hope to find out what this is eventually.
