I am desperately trying to get any information on this awesome find. I have had this for about 2 years and have been sending inquires to several artifact professionals at various places to no avail. One problem could be I don't know it's origin. I found it in a cosmetic zip up bag in a old suitcase that I bought at a thrift store. I will describe it as best as I can...It appears to be very old. I believe it is a pouch made of small woven rope or thick string. It was probably soft at one time, but has become rather stiff. It has a crude wooden top, carved in the shape of a diamond, that screws into the top neck of the pouch. It contains some remnants of a fine brown powder. The photos describe better than I can. Hoping someone can help I.D. this. I think it's pretty cool. Well, damn can't figure out how to add photo files.. Tried down loading files, but then they dont show up to drag down in the area to attach. :icon_scratch:

What you are describing sounds like a sachet - a small pouch of cedar shavings or rosemary, lavender & other herbs used to keep stored clothing smelling nice and discourage moths.

I agree its aggravating to go through all the unnecessary steps to post a file, even for veteran members like myself, and after all that they sometimes disappear. But thats the way it is. I see you have reposted. Just keep re;posting until it works.

Would that be too big to put snuff in?...d2

I thought it may be a snuff pouch also, but its so kinda tribal looking. Of course it may have been more supple and filled out to look more puffy. It may have gotten stiff and so it appears kinda flattened out a bit.

JMHO - My gut says that the top and the pouch are mismatched due to the top can't screw into a fiber bag - but the bag is woven in a interesting pattern -

wouldn't be appropriate for snuff I don't think, due to it going through the fibers. Most snuff was stored in tins or boxes. But people to crazy stuff. It's cool

It appears to me that the inside of the pouch neck is a wooden reciever for that wood top. It is grooved thread like inside
