he thought it was possibly a motorcycle gas tank well part of it. looks like a fender of some sort.

It looks like the emblem for a very early REO car. I think later they added the entire name of REO. Interesting find, Breezie

I don't think REO (Ransom E. Olds) ever used a winged R as their logo/emblem. As far as I know... REO has always used all three initials (REO).

Until, that is... they became Oldsmobile :hello:
Yes, they used the winged emblem, but not sure now about the single R emblem. The R. E. Olds factory and museum and is just 20 miles from my home, never had the tour though. Oldslowmobile is now an orphan car company.

This is probably off the wall - but could this possibly be a part of a vintage airplane? The Ryan Airline Co. had a logo that is described as a winged R - I have been trying to find an example but the best I can do is this tiny view on the tail of the Spirit of St. Louis:

Can we get the size of this item or did I miss it? A picture with something of size comparison would be best to visualize..

It's not a REO logo; so I retract my first thought.

I think it might be part of a vintage child's ride-on Pedal Toy like a tractor, car, airplane, etc. Maybe it was an early Radio Flier logo. Breezie

Is it attached to that piece it is sitting on? My first thought was a decorative cattle brand insignia. (Not actually the branding iron itself) Would be the "Flying Rocking R" ? :dontknow:
I have a registered cattle brand in Fl. The "Flying Action H".
Just a thought.

After retracting my REO post, and adding I thought it was part of a child's pedal vehicle, the more I look at it, the more it looks like part of a child's pedal tractor. Can we get some dimensions of the whole piece and of the emblem. Some closer pics would be nice too. Breezie
