Can anyone help me ID this. I found it about 6 inches beneath the soil in a local park. There was a railway until at least 1973, no aerial maps for the railway or its bridge after that.
There is a circled letter or number then the digits 81147, Its a unique shape and made of iron with a concave back. 5in by 1.25 by 1.25.

I think it is half of a cable connector to splice two ends together.

Its a piece from a pole line strain clamp. The notches in yours are where u-bolts were attached.

vhs07,Right on the nose, I knew it was part of a clamp that uses U-bolts but couldnt find a specific example, this shows an almost identical object inside of the clamp housing. Thank you so much, and thanks everyone else who helped too, no I can report back about its real purpose.

A second question, what are they generally used for? there was a railway less than 20 feet from where i dug it up.

That's a good question. I just know they're used on power lines. I'm in the scrap business and we get a lot of this stuff from the area electrical co-ops.
