I never tried it but I was told that soaking a 2 piece hollow button, the olive oil could get inside and is almost impossible to remove. It has a beautiful green patina, I would leave it as is. If you insist maybe try a hot peroxide bath for a few minutes. Your button is most likely WWI but I cannot read the backmark.

BuckleBoy has a button cleaning post here somewhere where he uses a toothpick.

I tried it a few times. I heated hydrogen peroxide a little in a microwave and soaked the brass item for a few minutes and it cleaned it good.

Buckleboy is a pro on cleaning buttons. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,165857.0.html

He says: "First off, DO NOT use olive oil on these buttons!! It will be absorbed into the button, and it will leak out for YEARS. Oil will also make the button more fragile. In some cases, even water can cause a two-piece button to disintegrate--so use your best judgement."

You may want to look at my listing of Great Seal button backmarks to recognize yours. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,212590.msg2659201.html#msg2659201

Heres some reading on the peroxide method of cleaning copper and brass. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,117293.0.html

Must read further about heating peroxide. I used 3%. The Nazis used peroxide for torpedo and submarine propulsion so be extremely careful not to heat high percentage peroxides like 70%. http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,39135.0.html
Thanks for the info !!
