Help!!! I think I found something.

How close was it to the tree?, what kind of tree was it? you may be wondering why I ask this.... People in the past have been known to use trees as markers. They would bury the goods and then put a young tree on top so that no one would suspect why a hole was dug. They would usually use trees that grew fast and where known to last long.. example fig trees.

Try to run your TM-808 with low ground balance and max sensitivity settings. Look for a RAPID rise in intensity marked by the needle not the sound, as well as a rapid decline when you pass the object.

If you get a nice signal and you have one of the older TM-808's with CAVE mode... step away and change to cave mode, manually ground balance and leave it in manual (not auto) and carefully approach the target making sure you don't move the unit much at all and keep it level. If your threshold goes up over the target then you may have some good metal (non-Ferrous). You may be wondering why... well in cave mode the machine works totally opposite of a metal detector.. signaling less Ferrous or ground mineral. This can be a hole in the ground or something filling a space in the ground that is not ferrous.

I was not trying to ridicule anyone, I only stated that I would bury the tools near the mine which is half a mile away and have the valuables by the camp. More logical in my book. Any way the hole I started digging was right against the tree, which means that when they buried whatever is down there, it was when the tree was very young. I think it is a cottonwood tree and it looked like it was at least 100 years old in growth. That is why I had roots to contend with because it was right next to the tree. My guess is that the roots had pushed down the contents at least another foot in the soil and I will have to cut and dig my way to the prize that awaits. But what suprises me in this forum is that no one has any objections if the box I started crumbling happens to be an old coffin. We are supposed to respect the dead, but do I ask permision to take his loot if it's there?

ZZZZZZZZZ Wake me after you dig .ZZZZZZZZZZ
:hello: Good luck

dig it up if its a body cover it up up and leave the loot if no bones keep going call back when you have the loot and pics

I can't go back till April or May, I'm out of vacation time. Plus I need to get a couple guys together to help dig it up. Hopefully they have a couple quads to use, it will be easier to get in and out of the area.

interesting story-- will be fun just to get it uncovered, but try to be easy enuff to make sure old dynamite don't do the uncovering. i had experience with my dad blowing stumps. never learned to like that stuff.== tenclaw=

We understand the hesitation to dig up a coffin. But hey, wouldn't a coffin be a good place to hide the loot? A peek into it and possible reburial (out of the roots) would probably be a nice thing to do. If there is some money there what the heck, it isn’t doing him any good. I don’t condone digging someone up just for that purpose. If you know it’s a coffin and the circumstances involved say it’s a burial and no metal signal then it may be time to leave it be. That’s what is nice about the device I have, it will only detect the element you load it with (computer algorithms) if I were there you would know real quick if it was gold, silver, and how deep. If it was paper/cloth money I wouldn’t be able to help.

Pieman, don't listen to this guy. That comment is evil.

That's true about a coffin. If it was marked as a grave in any way then I would not do any digging at all. If I find bones when I dig it up in spring of 2010 then I should cover it up in a respectfull manner. The problem will be that the box is all rotted out meaning that if something is buried with him it is spread all out on the ground and I'll have to handle it also. Once I touch the loot will I be strong enough to leave it with the bones when I cover it back up?

Pieman, that's a question only you can answer. Either way, when you rebury any bones you find, please pray over them and reconsecrate the grave.

I wish you well.

You need to buy yourself a regular detector, which would help to find single coins. Best of Luck to you.

Josh, what a comment, had me laughing. But seriously if someone stole from me living or dead I would make them pay, somehow.

I agree with #7. Keeep your big mouth shut.

I seriously doubt you are dealing with a coffin unless it is VERY new. I've excavated my fair share of burials over the years and unless a coffin is placed in a vault, it literally will pancake after 50-100 years depending on the soil type and depth. If you are in the desert and it's a relatively shallow grave in sandy soil, you won't have the pancake effect, but just about everywhere else will (3-6ft depth burials). Typically the most you will find are nails, possibly some wood remnants, staining, and maybe a few bones. It sounds like you have found a box that was buried very shallow that a tree grew over. If it is a coffin, leave it be as you can get into some dicey legal troubles disturbing a grave.

Let us know what you find as we all are very interested! Good luck!

Look. You're not a graverobber if you accidently find a wooden coffin, so don't worry about that. If you did accidently find old joe-blow out there with his gold bullion all stacked around him...treat his old decying bones with respect and take the gold or silver...I'm really sure he won't mind. He's got no where to spend the loot anyhow...And then some dark night when you hear a tapping so gently rapping at your chamber door...HEHEHE!!! :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7: :laughing7:
